We are seeking an experienced scientist/engineer to complement the current team and work in our Carlsbad, New Mexico Office to lead a well\-developed geohydrology field team that conducts daily investigations of the hydrologic environment surrounding WIPP\. Are you that scientist/engineer who can motivate your team and engage them in supporting our mission?

You will provide leadership to the team as it plans and conducts well\-monitoring and well testing activities\. You will support well development and maintenance activities\. Led by you, this team also supports infrastructure development for a geochemistry laboratory\. In addition, you and your team are sometimes deployed to support WIPP underground activities which could include gathering core samples for above\-ground testing\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Plan work activities with the field team;
+ Lead the teams daily work with other organizations involved in WIPP;
+ Report on the teams activity and progress to the customer;
+ Brainstorm new approaches to come up with solutions for hard problems;
+ Analyze and integrate field team results into documents provided to the sponsor and the regulator;
+ Participate directly in the field teams activities as needed\.


+ Bachelor's and Master's degree in Geohydrology, Applied Mathematics, Civil Engineering or relevant discipline;
+ Five or more years of relevant experience;
+ Experience managing a team in a scientific endeavor;
+ Experience \(and/or education\) developing and deploying tools and equipment for hydrologic field tests such as well monitoring, well testing and video logging;
+ Demonstrated excellence in the technical field\.

**Residence or the ability to reside in Carlsbad, NM**


+ Experience conducting field programs within a regulatory environment;
+ Experience in site characterization and/or laboratory experimentation for derivation of hydrological model parameters;
+ Experience with stringent QA/QC requirements, such as those associated with the WIPP or Yucca Mountain projects;
+ Familiarity with modern methods of well\-test analysis;
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills\.

Department Description:

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant \(WIPP\) is the world's only licensed and operating deep geologic repository for the permanent disposal of transuranic waste\. WIPP is operated by Nuclear Waste Partnership, under contract to the Department of Energy's Carlsbad Field Office \(CBFO\)\. Sandia provides scientific advice to CBFO in many areas, including modifications to the repository's operating permits, periodic recertification of the repository, on\-going monitoring of repository performance against regulatory requirements, and optimization of the national transuranic waste complex\. The Repository Performance Department \(08882\), part of Sandia's Carlsbad Programs Group, provides the experimental and fieldwork capability needed to inform CBFO as they seek to assure continued and uninterrupted certification and permitting of WIPP\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.
