We are seeking a creative and innovative Research and Development Scientist or Engineer with a focus on Geosciences Engineering\. Are you looking to apply your innovative and creative technical abilities to applications of national importance, if so, this might be the right job for you? You will be able to utilize your skills in risk analysis, your deep understanding of statistics, particularly probabilistic uncertainty, and your ability to program and modify computational codes\. The emphasis of this position is the development and maintenance of computational models and tools for the analysis of geologic nuclear waste disposal systems\. On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Perform the documentation, programming, and testing \(i\.e\. automated builds with unit and regression tests, etc\.\) of process model implementations\.
+ Perform and document analyses used to demonstrate impacts to waste repository regulatory compliance following planned or proposed changes at the site by the Department of Energy;
+ Develop and document new or modified parameters implemented in the computational code suite used to model repository physical processes;
+ Perform testing, validation, and documentation of code changes to ensure correctness of calculated results and alignment to Quality Assurance procedures used in code development;
+ Perform scientific investigations into physical processes related to the geosciences, including brine and gas flows in porous media, radionuclide transport through geologic layers, gas generation due to material degradation, and the sensitivity of calculated compliance results to changes in these processes;
+ Communicate results to explain options, insights, and trade\-offs to customers and regulators in a concise way that enables action;
+ Work with the team on technical publications and presentation delivery\.

Required:

+ Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
+ Master's degree plus two or more years of experience; or a PhD in a relevant discipline \(Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Environmental Science or a related discipline\);
+ Experience with risk analysis;
+ Experience with statistics;
+ Experience with computational modeling and programming;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L\-level security clearance\.

_Applicant must reside in or have the ability to reside in Carlsbad, New Mexico\._

Desired:

+ Computer coding capabilities in the application of scientific programming in C, C\+\+, FORTRAN, and the Python scripting language;
+ Ability to function independently when needed, as well as having the ability to communicate and collaborate with an interdisciplinary research team;
+ Ability to self\-motivate;Experience interacting with government customers and regulatory agencies;
+ Experience doing computational work in a quality assurance environment;
+ Experience with probabilistic risk assessment\.

Department Description:

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant \(WIPP\), located in southeast New Mexico, is a licensed and operating deep geologic repository for the disposal of transuranic nuclear waste\. The WIPP Performance Assessment and Decision Analysis Department \(8881\) at Sandia's Carlsbad remote site has the lead role in designing, executing, analyzing, documenting, and defending \(1\) calculations used to determine compliance of the WIPP with federal compliance regulations, and \(2\) calculations used to quantify compliance impacts associated with potential modifications to the WIPP\. Department 8881 also has an ongoing effort to modernize the current suite of computational tools used in WIPP compliance calculations\. This work entails the development of updates to currently used flow and transport process models, software development, run control scripting of the modernized code suite, and validation testing\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.
