The Mechanical Environments Department \(01531\) in the Validation and Qualification Sciences Group \(01530\) is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to lead a multi\-disciplinary team of engineers, designers, test operation teams, business partners and technicians to develop, plan, design, execute and document large\-scale experiments at one of the departments four Major Environmental Testing Facilities\. The successful candidate must enjoy working in a dynamic environment on programs of critical national security importance which will challenge and develop the candidates technical, management, and leadership skills\. Department 1531 Test Engineers work closely with a broad spectrum of internal and external sponsors and occasional travel is required\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Apply scientific theories and laws along with engineering methods and judgement to lead the delivery of large scale, sometimes hazardous, sometimes innovative experiments to meet the Validation and Qualification needs of Sandia National Laboratories missions\.
+ Work with program sponsors, department managers, ES&H subject matter experts, and other team members to ensure that the customers test objectives are met on time and within budget while complying with all corporate and Group Work Planning and Controls requirements\.
+ Support program development efforts, publish and present work and grow the group portfolio with internal Sandia and external customer areas\.


+ BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering plus two or more years of relevant experience
+ Active DOE Q security clearance or equivalent


+ Ability to work efficiently within a team environment
+ Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly to other team members
+ Experience leading teams and projects
+ Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly to other team members
+ Experience with large scale experimental design, setup, and execution
+ Experience with dynamic shock, inertial loading, and/or vibration testing
+ Experience with measurement methods and associated technologies
+ Experience with interpretation of measured structural response data
+ Experience with computational solid mechanics using Sandia's in\-house solid mechanics codes and/or commercial codes
+ Ability and willingness to travel
+ Knowledge and experience with scoping, designing, planning, and executing research experiments, design, and development projects
+ Ability to apply knowledge and ideas to solve engineering problems
+ Demonstrated ability to team across disciplines

Department Description:

The Validation and Qualification Sciences Group \(1530\) is responsible for large\-scale experimental activities in Tech Area III\. The Mechanical Environments department \(1531\) is one of six departments within 1530 with the responsibility for developing and delivering experiments to provide information on the performance, safety, and reliability of nuclear weapons and other systems and to acquire data to validate computational simulations of these events\. The Mechanical Environments department owns and operates four Major Environmental Testing Facilities including:

+ The Centrifuge/Superfuge Complex
+ The Mechanical Shock Complex
+ The Mobile Gun Test Complex
+ The Water Impact/Drop Tower Complex

1530 is a significant contributor to Sandias Nuclear Weapons Stewardship Mission but also serves a broader community that includes all of the Sandia Management Units with a growing Work for Others portfolio\.
