Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Would you like to join a dynamic team that solves significant issues for our nation's security? If so, we encourage you to explore this new and exciting opportunity within Sandia's RF & Electronics Systems Center.

Our team is seeking a highly motivated Software Engineer. As the selected candidate, your primary focus will be embedded software for specialized RF communications systems for National Security applications. In this position, your job duties will include: conceptualization, requirements development, software programming, operating systems integration and configuration, design definition documentation, qualification/acceptance testing process development and execution, system deployment support, and system sustainment activities. It is crucial to have an in-depth understanding of mixed-signal (RF, analog, digital) electrical designs which enables the control, optimization, and troubleshooting of these special communication systems.

Our systems range from ultra-low power RF receiver/transmitter designs typically requiring C-code bare-metal programming up to cutting-edge high-performance CPU/GPU/DSP computing systems typically requiring C++ programming on Linux operating systems. Projects range from very urgent, quick reaction requests in response to real-world driven needs to longer term, life-critical efforts with rigorous development requirements. You will become a member of a multi-discipline, success oriented, high-performance team. This position requires occasional travel of 6-8 trips within the Continental U.S. per year.

Required:

+ Requires a Masters degree in a relevant engineering discipline plus five or more years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience (Bachelors degree plus eight or more years) to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job.
+ Experience developing embedded software and firmware (C, C++) in bare-metal and/or Linux operating system environments.
+ Knowledge and proficiency with embedded electronics design and time-critical control of sensors.
+ Familiarity with general test and measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, DVM, logic analyzers) and RF test equipment (network analyzer, spectrum analyzer).
+ Requires occasional travel of 6-8 trips within the Continental U.S. per year.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph.

Desired:

Ideally, we would like your background to include one or more of the following:

+ Familiarity with DoD and IC organizations.
+ Experience with software regression testing.
+ Agile software development.
+ Experience using and administering software project management and configuration management tools.
+ Mixed signal digital and analog hardware design including schematic capture and layout of high density printed wiring assemblies incorporating micro-controllers, FPGAs and PLDs.
+ Ability to plan, coordinate, and document field tests.Experience or familiarity with the following software: Matlab/Simulink, LabVIEW or equivalent is desirable.
+ Experience with high-level programming language(s).
+ Knowledge of RF, Digital Communications, radar, and/or EW systems and principles.
+ Ability to work effectively on both small and large development teams (two-to-eight members).
+ Good communication and documentation skills.
+ Great presentation skills with interest and ability to interact with internal and external customers.
+ Be motivated by working with a highly successful, dynamic project team delivering systems that impact our National Security.
+ Active DOE Q clearance.
+ Active SCI clearance.

Department Description:

The RF & Systems Electronics Center (Center 5300) provides key electronics systems work to a wide variety of nuclear weapons, space, intelligence and military programs across Sandia and the Nation. The Advanced RF Systems group (5330) supports the Nations technology superiority strategies by delivering capabilities for RF & spectral dominance, global highly-reliable communications, and novel advancements for future strength. We are a highly dynamic set of departments that cross-team to provide integrated engineering systems solutions ranging from core research through prototype development and high-end, fielded products.

The Advanced Special Communications Systems department (5335) strives to Develop terrestrial, airborne, and space based special communications systems for use in surveillance and reconnaissance, Tagging Tracking and Locating (TTL), and the relay/detection/characterization of RF signals present in challenging environments. Our customers include a variety of government organizations including the Intelligence Community and those conducting special operations missions. Our staff members have a diverse skills base including microwave circuit design, antenna design, signal analysis, digital signal processing, embedded software, and digital FPGA designs. Applications include long and short-range communications and transponder systems, typically utilizing ultra-low power signaling techniques. Our design challenges include highly miniaturized electronics, low-power maximally efficient transceivers, signal extraction in very low signal-to-noise environments, and signal analysis of RF and communication systems.
