R&D, Electronics Engineer (Early/Mid-Career)

The Engine Combustion Research Department has an opening for a R&D electro\-optical engineer to join our world\-class research team\.

On any given day, you may be called on to perform the following:

+ Design and implementation of electronic circuits and programming of desktop and embedded applications using common tools and languages \(e\.g\. SPICE, EAGLE, Matlab, Labview, Python, C\+\+, VHDL, Verilog\);
+ Design and implementation of complex laboratory experimental apparatus, using optical ray\-tracing software \(e\.g\. Zemax OpticStudio\) to optimize performance;
+ Developing and evaluating custom non\-linear optical devices to provide high\-power, tunable UV radiation for planar fluorescent imaging applications;
+ Design and development of telemetry systems to transmit data from moving internal IC engine components;
+ Design, development and evaluation of custom, high\-powered pulsed LED assemblies capable of 10 ns pulses at MHz repetition rates;
+ Experience enabling effective mentoring of electro\-optical technologist, and assisting as needed, in:
+ Instrumenting optically accessible engines and high\-pressure devices with conventional transducers \(thermocouples, pressure transducers, etc\.\);
+ Setting\-up, operating, and maintaining commercial and custom\-built scientific laser systems, including high\-power pulsed Nd:YAG lasers, optical parametric oscillators \(OPOs\) and non\-linear frequency conversion optics, pulsed dye lasers, CW ion lasers, and solid\-state lasers;
+ Developing enhancements and modifications to commercial laser systems to improve their ability to meet stringent optical characteristics and perform servicing and maintenance of the systems;
+ Design, component procurement, and assembly of custom electronic devices in compliance with standards employed by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories \(NRTL\);
+ Development of electronic interfaces to synchronize lasers and other imaging or measurement devices with each other and with the engine;
+ Use of electronic and/or optical test instruments;
+ Use of CAD software for panel layout, electronic circuit and printed circuit\-board design, or mechanical component design;
+ Supporting resident and visiting researchers and coordinating research support activities with peers, facilities and maintenance personnel, and external suppliers;
+ Assisting with laboratory operations, including tracking department property, complying with all environmental and safety requirements, and developing required documentation\.

+ Advanced degree in Engineering or the Physical Sciences; or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of five years additional relevant work experience;
+ Demonstrated understanding of laser physics, optics, and electronics\.

Department Description:

The mission of Sandia/California's Engine Combustion Research Department is to develop the science base needed by industry to build and optimize a new generation of advanced, high\-efficiency, clean internal\-combustion \(IC\) engines that use both conventional and alternative fuels\. The department is part of Sandia's Combustion Research Facility \(CRF\), where ~100 scientists, engineers, and technologists conduct basic and applied research to improve our nation's ability to use and control combustion processes efficiently and cleanly\. Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.
