Our team is seeking a self-motivating R&D General Technologist to perform electronic material and device fabrication and characterization supporting a broad range of Sandia missions. You will be making and testing samples and devices using either existing process or design new procedures in collaboration with a diverse team. Some existing techniques include Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD), DC and RF sputtering, Raman spectroscopy, Cyclic Voltammetry, Semiconductor Parameter Analyzer, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Electron Microscopy (EM, including SEM and TEM).

You will partner with the technical team and customers to meet objectives, communicate progress, and assure that goals and deliverables are met. You will be expected to gain a comprehensive understanding of the design and validation of various electronic interface between computers and test equipment.

On any given day, you may

+ Perform experiments, maintain experimental equipment, develop procedures, analyze results and prepare documentation on test results and conclusions
+ Design and maintain experimental apparatus involving electronics, vacuum and electrochemical systems, including some programing and data acquisition with LabVIEW
+ Develop operation and safety documentation and maintain a safe working environment in the laboratories
+ Provide training to new users for safe operation of the laboratories
+ Interface with people outside the department, such as safety coordinators, facility, procurement with external vendors, local and state inspectors


You have the following:

+ Associates degree in a STEM discipline (e.g. mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, computer science, materials science) OR equivalent work experience
+ Experience with design, assembly, testing and troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical devices
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level clearance


You also have one, or more, of the following:

+ Bachelor's degree in materials science, engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related field
+ Experience with data acquisition systems, computer control systems or transducer electronics
+ Experience in the operation of characterization instrumentation, or an aptitude for working with hardware and instrumentation
+ Experience with laboratory set-up, health and safety concerns, lab maintenance activities and working with hazardous chemicals
+ Experience in AFM, XRD, EM, and electrical measurements

Department Description:

The Materials Physics department performs fundamental research on the structure and properties of materials to support programs in energy research, device physics, materials reliability, and national security. Specific activities include experimental and modeling studies of surface electronic structure and surface atomic structure and dynamics of metals, oxides, low dimensional semiconductors, and adsorbates; atomic-scale structure and composition analysis of metals, semiconductors, and composites; electrical and optical properties of low-dimensional semiconductors and optoelectronic devices; and the structural and electrochemical characterization of solid-state ionic materials. The Department supports internal and external sponsors and government agencies that seek solutions to problems of fundamental scientific inquiry, energy sustainability, and national defense.
