Are you seeking an opportunity to apply your technical skills towards national security challenges? Our team is seeking a R&D Electromechanical Technologist to support the development of mechanism components-components that play a critical role in assuring the safety and security of the nations nuclear deterrent in a wide range of environments, including severe accident scenarios. In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of these mechanically intricate and significant components consisting of over 100 custom-designed and built piece parts.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

+ Assemble miniature electro-mechanical mechanisms using microscopes and small hand tools for prototype and development builds
+ Participate in product realization team meetings for individual components to determine and track testing, assembly, and laboratory needs
+ Coordinate part manufacturing internally with Sandia manufacturing liaisons and externally with the Kansas City National Security Campus and outside vendors
+ Provide support for environmental and functional testing of components
+ Perform disassembly-based failure analyses (post-mortems) after testing using hand tools, microscopes, and digital imaging equipment
+ Partner with other technologists and key staff to ensure progress and success of project milestones


+ High School Diploma and 3 years of directly related experience
+ Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q Security Clearance


Ideally, your background would also include:

+ Active DOE Q security clearance or equivalent DoD clearance
+ Knowledge of mechanical engineering, genuine technical curiosity, and an interest and aptitude for learning more
+ Experience working with product development teams in design, assembly, testing, and production phases
+ Experience assembling precision mechanical products in a high rigor environment
+ Experience manufacturing and inspecting precision metal parts (ex. CNC machining, gaging, CMM based inspection)
+ Hands-on experience performing failure analysis and troubleshooting of mechanical products
+ Ability to clearly communicate findings and observations to an engineering team in written reports and informal presentations
+ Detail-oriented mindset, ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects independently, and outstanding work ethic and motivation
+ Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with teams with varied strengths and across differing communication styles
+ Strong dedication to quality, safety, collaboration, and partnership

Department Description:

We are a mechanical engineering group responsible for safety and security mechanisms (components) for Nuclear Deterrence (ND) applications. We have responsibility for conceptual design, full-scale engineering development, product characterization, product qualification, component production support, and ongoing surveillance. Mechanisms for which we have design responsibility include unique signal strong links, environmental sensing devices, and weapon release detection switches.

Security Clearance:
