Are you passionate about cyber experimentation on high consequence national security systems? Are you eager to develop emulation systems for weapons and space-based platforms? Do you dream of distributed ledger technologies, smart contracts, and privacy-preserving computation? Do you want to perform research in data authenticity and trust, particularly on systems that we dont own or dont trust?

If so, we want you to join our multidisciplinary community of cybersecurity researchers, scientists, and engineers committed to solving the cybersecurity resiliency challenges facing our nation! As part of Organization 05682, Experimental Cyber Initiatives, youll have the opportunity to engage in research across the technology spectrum to build bridges across multiple mission areas at Sandia.

To support our nations critical security and resiliency missions, our staff will engage in a variety of research areas including:

+ Cyber experimentation (emulation, analytics, verification/validation, uncertainty quantification) with hardware-in-the-loop
+ Virtualization of legacy, novel, and embedded computing architectures
+ Data analytics, particularly focused on data authenticity, verification, and validation
+ Privacy-preserving computation and trust on un-trusted systems
+ Nuclear weapons digital assurance and command, control, and communications
+ Cyber resiliency and cognitive analytics for space-based platforms

The successful hire will help cultivate relationships, grow existing programs, and develop new and existing programs across US government agencies, including the Department of Defense (DoD), Intelligence Community (IC), and programs inside and outside of the National Security Programs (NSP) portfolio of Division 5000. They will also be responsible for collaborating closely with peers and management across Center 05600 and the Labs.

+ A Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related mathematical field plus 6 years experience; or a Master's degree in a related field plus 2 years' experience; or equivalent experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform cybersecurity research and development
+ The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q level security clearance and SCI-level clearance, which may require a polygraph test

If you dont meet all the below desired qualifications, that shouldnt prevent you from applying. Were still interested in talking to you if youre passionate about our mission and eager to learn.

+ Experience in one or more of the following areas:

- Experimentation in or development on Sandia-developed emulation platforms (e.g., Firewheel, minimega, or SCEPTRE) or external emulation/virtualization platforms, such as QEMU/KVM
- Software design and development, particularly in moving software from proof-of-concept software to research-grade
- VAX-based architectures
- Logical architectures for virtualization
- Low-level computer hardware and software (e.g., writing device drivers)
- Translating computer engineering specifications and documentation into virtual peripherals
- Network protocols (reverse-engineering and implementation)
- Experimental databases
- Distributed ledger technologies, cryptocurrencies, or smart contracts
- Privacy-reserving computation
+ Experience in nuclear weapons/deterrence, conventional weapons, or space mission areas
+ Ability to prioritize and execute in a principled and focused manner
+ Creativity and innovative problem-solving skills
+ Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain sophisticated ideas clearly and concisely
+ An active DOE Q-level security clearance and an active SCI-level Clearance; or other equivalent active security clearance such as DOD Top Secret and SCI-level clearance

Department Description:

The Experimental Cyber Initiatives department builds and employs cyber experimentation tools and techniques for high-consequence national security systems, particularly space-based systems and weapons systems. We are also breaking ground in data systems understanding, focusing on data authenticity, verification/validation, and privacy-preserving computation. Our team doesnt rely on pre-existing tools or platforms (even those built at Sandia), focusing instead on the novel solutions that might be necessary for every new problem. Were able to bridge multiple mission areas and find success in building communities of interest around our research.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO Statement:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
