We are seeking an embedded software engineer/developer with experience in software systems engineering principles and software validation and verification techniques\.

We have a new exciting project involving the development of an Autonomous Flight Safety System \(AFSS\) for use on a future hypersonic flight vehicle application\. This project requires the application of rigorous software systems engineering principles\. The software associated with this application is Safety Critical and thus requires a significant level of proper software documentation consistent with industry norms for software lifecycle management\. It will also require the application of a high level of test rigor and discipline in order garner approval for use by cognizant Government authorities\. You will work collaboratively with a small team of systems engineers and software engineers to define and implement the required process rigor, develop the application software, and establish and apply valid test methods to all software related aspects of the AFSS throughout the development lifecycle\. The activities you participate in over the next 3 years will culminate in a flight test of National importance in that timeframe\.

Longer term, you will assist in software development activities supporting other similar projects\. Our team operates within a well\-resourced laboratory facility where subsystem level software development and real\-time hardware\-in\-the\-loop simulation activities occur\. This lab partners with the facilities used to integrate and test the vehicle flight systems, and NGC personnel frequently support related activities there\. These efforts are multi\-faceted in nature and require a broad skill set of engineering talent in a variety of technical disciplines\. The need and utility for proficient software engineers in this domain is ever\-evolving and enduring\. Periodic travel may be required to support field integration and flight system test activities\. Such activities typically occur at rocket launch facilities located in Alaska, Hawaii, and Virginia\. Associated trip durations range from a few days to several weeks depending on the assigned role and responsibilities\.

On any given day, you may be asked to:

+ Implement the software development lifecycle process for the AFSS project
+ Support AFSS software requirements development and tailoring of requirements consistent with Range Commanders Council \(RCC\) doctrine
+ Collaborate with the Systems Engineering team to integrate AFSS software requirements with higher level requirements at the system level
+ Assist the AFSS software lead with software engineering development
+ Design and execute the test methodology required to certify the AFSS software product for use in its end application
+ Support periodic interim design reviews with the External Program Sponsor
+ Assist the NGGC Enterprise in finding opportunities for continuous improvement in our software development practices


+ You have a bachelors in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline and 4 or more years of relevant experience; OR Bachelors and Advanced \(Masters or PhD\) degree in one of the above disciplines\.
+ You bring experience in embedded software development at the application layer utilizing C/C\+\+\.
+ Your background includes experience applying software engineering standards, such as IEEE Standard 12207, to software lifecycle processes\.
+ You have an active DOE L\-Level security clearance, or equivalent, with ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level clearance\.


Your background should also include:

+ Understands or has experience working in an Agile Development environment\.
+ Familiarity with the Greenhills INTEGRITY Real Time Operating System\.
+ Applications experience with real\-time embedded software engineering at the hardware level, including I/O driver software, interrupt service routines, and networking protocols\.
+ Lab experience with the use of common digital debugging tools such as oscilloscopes, logic probes, and logic analyzers\.
+ Experience with software unit testing\.
+ Experience in application of fundamental Systems Engineering principles\.
+ Proven verbal and written communication skills\.
+ Ability to collaborate and contribute as a member of multi\-disciplinary team\.

Department Description:

The Navigation Guidance and Control \(NGC\) Department 5426 provides technology solutions and support to both Offensive and Defensive Military Systems development projects within the Integrated Military Systems Program at Sandia\. Hardware and software technologies are developed, integrated, and tested to provide flight control solutions for missiles and hypersonic reentry platforms\. Typically, these systems support the Missile Defense Agency, Army, Navy, and other Department of Defense Agencies\. Our applications cover a broad spectrum of applications; from advanced aerodynamically controlled vehicles dropped from aircraft, to maneuvering hypersonic warheads, to ballistic missile systems\. All the activities require the extensive use of real time embedded computers and custom real\-time software for the realization of affiliated fully\-integrated flight control system solutions\. The NGC group is significantly involved in modeling and simulation activities in support of these same application areas as well as activities for the Sandia Space Mission Program\. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
