We are seeking a computational physicist to work on mission critical development of electron/X-ray radiation transport codes as well as nuclear deterrent analysis with these codes and ancillary software tools! The radiation transport and cross section processing codes developed and maintained in our department are primarily written in C++ and Fortran. The code development activities require formal software quality and agile practices. Our department performs radiation transport analysis for nuclear deterrents and other applications on a wide variety of projects.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Implement novel features, developing improved functionality, and maintaining code quality.
+ Use high-performance computing (HPC) platforms to perform large parallel calculations, uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis, and parameter studies. This will also include running ancillary support computer codes, some developed in house.

Required:

+ A Ph.D. in engineering, physics, computational science, or closely related field
+ Experience with the development and/or applications of either deterministic and/or Monte Carlo methods for particle radiation transport
+ Computer programming experience implementing and or processing of either deterministic and/or Monte Carlo particle radiation transport techniques
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security Clearance

Desired:

+ Experience with the development, code implementation and/or application of either deterministic or Monte Carlo methods to coupled electron/X-ray particle radiation transport
+ Experience with uncertainty quantification, verification and validation, sensitivity analysis and/or optimization
+ Experience with high performance computing architectures and execution
+ Scientific computer programming experience with C++ and/or Fortran
+ Experience with Python and Perl scripting languages
+ Experience in software quality practices
+ Experience in working with and/or doing analyses for nuclear deterrent based customer

Department Description:

The Radiation Effects Theory Department (1341) perform theoretical and computational research to understand the effects caused by ionizing radiation from nuclear weapons, space environments and other sources, including those generated by laboratory machines. We develop physical models and numerical methods for deployment in computer codes that model the interaction of particle radiation (X-rays, electrons, neutrons, gammas) with matter. We utilize these and other types of codes to predict and understand electrical and mechanical radiation effects. Software quality engineering, software verification methods, validation to experimental data, and uncertainty quantification are fundamental to these computational efforts. We support a variety of customers who are concerned with the effect of radiation on their systems and components.
