We are seeking an outstanding research scientist to join our team to develop new concepts for the next generation of systems and capabilities for the Global Security Remote Sensing (GSRS) business area. The selected candidate will help provide technical depth within the team to collect, incubate, enable, foster, enhance, and collectively merge concepts into capabilities that can be used to address national technical problems for the nation. The selected applicant must thrive in a rapid, innovative idea driven environment to architect, conceptually design, rapidly develop, and be driven by the desire to contribute to national security missions. Typically, someone joining the department and group requires only a solid mathematical, physics, programming foundation to go along with a desire to learn and the work ethic to get things done.

On a given day, you may be called to:

+ Participate in the full spectrum of development cycles from remote sensing concept development to technical leadership to successfully realize advance technology demonstrations proving game changing capabilities.
+ Apply a wide range of engineering principles and techniques to merge concepts from different disciplines to deliver exquisite novel engineering solutions to complex system problems.
+ Perform modeling of simulations of real-time exploitation algorithms employing machine learning techniques on various electronics platforms for remote sensing systems which can be ground base, airborne or space based systems.

The environment is typically resource constrained and new techniques are required to realize mission success. The duties span collaboration across multiple disciplines and capabilities in order to realize a rapid prototype for proof of functionality. The work will involve multiple phenomenologys such as RF/EO/IR/Seismic/Acoustic/Magnetic/Infrasound. You will work within a team in constructive brainstorming sessions and consult on various technical problems. This work will comprise of embedded programming, electronics board design, testing, PCB layout, defect detection and the power system designs. Effective and efficient communication is required for success with both written and verbal skills are critical for team success.


+ Bachelor's degree, or higher, in computer science, electrical/computer engineering, physics, optical sciences, or related technical discipline, plus 5 years related experience (MS + 2 years or PhD can also be considered)
+ Can obtain a DOE Q clearance with SCI access which will require willingness to be polygraph tested for both lifestyle and counter-intelligence


+ Demonstrated experience with full lifecycle development from requirements definition and derivation to final product deliveries and support
+ Demonstrated ability to develop and present ideas and results in oral and written form
+ Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment across many centers
+ Exceptional communication (written/verbal) skills to develop and deliver technical presentations for customer review
+ Demonstrated an ability to constructively work in team environments
+ Demonstrated knowledge of and experience research, design, and development activities, projects, or initiatives
+ Proven ability to team across disciplines and accepting of feedback
+ Experience/education in a subset of the following: Optical Engineering, RF, Electronics Design, Pattern Recognition, System Engineering Principles, System Modeling (UML) Principles, Advanced Data Processing (Multi-Core), Physics, Space Systems and Ground Systems
+ Phase Retrieval, Fourier optics, micro-fabrication for electronics
+ Machine Learning / Neural Networks / Autonomy
+ Matlab, Simulink, C++, C, Python, Java, LabView, VHDL, Flight Software
+ Signal Image Processing and Signal Exploitation Experience
+ Interferometry, diffractive optics, ZEMAX (design tool)Microsemi RTG4, Xilinx Tools and FPGAs, UT700, SpaceWire, Space Fibre
+ Experience with relevant application and mission domains (ground systems/data centers/operations centers, remote sensing, sensor technologies, proliferation detection, monitoring and surveillance)
+ Experience working with Big Data Challenges
+ Understanding or desire to analyze technical roadmaps for gaps
+ Current DOE clearance

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship.
