Would you be interested in joining a dynamic team that solves complicated issues for national security?

We are seeking a R&D, Computer Engineer as a member of the technical staff, and are looking at many fields including computer science and electrical engineering. The successful candidate will initially write software to control a ST microprocessor based integrated board we have already designed to control chemical sensing equipment for prototype testing; and layout boards and do circuit design for future projects. You will join a multi-disciplinary organization focused on problem solving in a team atmosphere in the Biological and Chemical Sensors Department.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop software to run portable sensor systems for national security applications;
+ Perform component-level design of the electronics for sensor technologies;
+ Analyze data using programs such as Matlab or statistical analysis software;
+ Help assemble laboratory testing setups for new sensors or systems;
+ Optimize sensor system electronics for low power operation;
+ Develop sensor algorithms.


+ Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field; OR equivalent combination of education and experience;
+ Experience with embedded system programming using microprocessor IDEs such as MPLAB, Visual Studio, or PyCharm;
+ Familiarity with PCB layout, circuit design and/or circuit simulation (for example - using PSPICE, Altium EAGLE, etc.) for digital and/or analog signals;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.


+ Skilled at interpersonal, oral, and written communications;
+ Experience in electronics and electronics assembly including testing, testing equipment (oscilloscopes, power supplies, function generators, and various meters) and troubleshooting;
+ Experience with data analysis and/or statistics using Microsoft Excel, Matlab, Minitab, or equivalent software;
+ Familiarity with programming language useful for developing control, analysis, and readout responses for a chemical sensor (for example: C, C#, C++, Python, etc.) interfacing via a microcontroller IDE;
+ Strong desire to be involved with, and demonstrated proficiency in working effectively with multi-disciplinary, dynamic teams across the laboratories, partners, and customers;
+ Familiarity with finite element or other computational modeling approaches;
+ Experience developing sensor algorithms and implementing signal processing strategies.

Department Description:

The Biological and Chemical Sensors Department at Sandia National Laboratories specializes in miniature sensors and sensor-based system for a variety of sensing applications including chemical, biological, and explosives. These sensors and systems can be built into wearable, handheld, UAV, or fixed/installed formats. We have a strong emphasis on nano, micro, and mesoscale fabrication in our R&D including the capability to integrate custom electronics developed in Sandia's MESA facility. To support our chemical vapor detection effort, we are developing a state-of-the-art test and evaluation system to challenge a variety of sensors and systems. In biological detection, we have acoustic- and electrochemical-based portable systems for cell lysis and highly specific and sensitive detection of DNA, RNA, proteins and metabolites. We also have state-of-the-art microbiology capabilities to aid in biological sensor development. Our technologies are designed to be non-invasive or minimally invasive, and easy to use in the field or at the point of care.
