The Advanced Concepts Engineering Department is seeking a highly qualified and experienced engineer to lead various projects that explore, design, and develop advanced flight system technologies and concepts. The position will require leading subject matter experts in multiple scientific disciplines to develop future offensive and defensive concepts and algorithms for next generation systems.

On any given day, you may:

+ Lead the programmatic and strategic aspects of the projects
+ Have substantial technical understanding of the engineering products and technologies being analyzed, conceptualized, developed, and tested
+ Be responsible for forming and leading diverse teams of engineers/scientists to achieve technical objectives
+ Serve as a principal technical project interface with internal Sandia organizations, as well as external partners and suppliers
+ Interact with senior DoD or NNSA leadership
+ Manage technical and programmatic requirements
+ Manage technical and non-technical risks and opportunities, as well as assure quality products

Required:

+ Master's degree (M.S. or M.E.) in Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related STEM discipline plus six (6) years of relevant experience and/or achievements that demonstrate knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent analysis, research and development;

- or a Doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related STEM discipline plus four (4) years of relevant experience
+ Experience working on DoD development and/or acquisition programs
+ Background includes experience working with/presenting to DoD senior leaders
+ Program management/leadership on engineering/R&D programs and projects
+ Ability to make decisions requiring scientific or engineering judgment across more than one discipline
+ Ability to obtain a DOE Q security clearance

Desired:

Ideally, we would like to see your background include some of the following:

+ Demonstrated teaming skills, including the ability to effectively collaborate with UARCs and FFRDCs (e.g. John Hopkins APL, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Aerospace Corporation, DOE Laboratories)
+ Experience leading and working within integrated multi-disciplinary teams
+ Experience working with advanced technologies and delivering responsive technical solutions in anticipation of national security needs
+ Currently possess an active DOE or DoD clearance
+ Additional traits and experience that are desired and will help a candidate be successful in this role include having knowledge of DoD and COCOM operations, having nuclear weapons experience, possessing a missile defense background, having passion for being a transformation/change agent with an eye on the future for next generation concepts, and possessing political astuteness and the ability to influence OSD decision makers

Department Description:

The Advanced Concepts Engineering department explores, analyzes, designs, and develops advanced technologies and concepts throughout the kill chain from initial detection to final engagement. We design and develop detailed components, subsystems, models, and algorithms with a global perspective and broader understanding at the system, system of systems, and mission level. We focus on high-fidelity engineering level analysis up through architecture level analysis. The department integrates cross-laboratory, multi-disciplinary expertise to solve the most challenging national security problems.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
