We are seeking additional professional staff-level Aerospace Systems engineers. Formal training and applications experience in an engineering discipline, such as Aerospace, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis in dynamic systems and/or control systems design and analysis is required.

Sandia has an enduring role in assisting the Nation develop hypersonic weapon systems supporting the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) program. Sandia develops prototype flight vehicles for this program which are flown periodically to provide proof of principle in support of realizing future operational weapon system capabilities for the United States Military. We also do similar work on a wide variety of various other vehicle platforms.

The Navigation Guidance and Control (NGC) department develops real time flight control system solutions for various flight vehicle applications. We seek to create additional depth in all the NGC applications areas, as well as develop additional expertise for implementing flight control solutions on embedded real time computing platforms. The NGC department also relies heavily on high-fidelity simulation codes to design these prototype systems and use these codes to verify that the on-board flight control system real time embedded software is implemented consistent with specified requirements. The foundation of these codes is comprised of element models of the environment and the flight system subsystems which are realized using Mathworks Simulink. Additional expertise for development, sustainment, and application of the NGC simulation framework is also needed.

You will work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary NGC flight controls team which collectively develop and prove-out the flight control system solution for each demonstration flight as it occurs. Work is currently underway to support multiple upcoming planned flight tests which will occur over the course of the next several years. These flight tests will require a significant level of both flight control system and Mod/Sim development and application. In parallel with those efforts, we are deeply integrated as National Team Members in external sponsor-funded activities to explore advanced spiral technologies. Most of these efforts rely heavily on Aerospace Systems expertise to scope and analyze requirements; and to conceptual design solutions within this category of future challenges.

Longer term, you will grow into leadership positions in the NGC department involving similar activities for other systems and sponsored activities. We are experiencing explosive growth of interest by various new potential sponsors. Numerous Military organizations are seeking to leverage the current technologies we have already successfully demonstrated, are also aggressively pursuing advanced technologies, such as precisions GPS-denied navigation. This interest is expected to be sustained for the next several years which will provide a rich set of problems and challenges for the NGC team.


+ Your background includes an undergraduate and advanced (Masters or PhD) degree in Aerospace Engineering; or either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree with an aerospace emphasis. Or a bachelors degree in Aerospace, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering with 4 or more years of relevant experience.
+ We are seeking expertise in the development and application of Equations of Motion for complex dynamical systems, and the ability to solve these type equations using modern computational methods and platforms.
+ Applicants must have familiarity with the application of aerodynamics to flight vehicle applications.
+ You must have identifiable experience with the capabilities, use, and application of Mathworks Matlab and Simulink.
+ Your skillset must include verifiable proficiency with the application of the C/C++ programming languages.
+ Applicants must be able to demonstrate verbal and written communication and technical content presentation skills.
+ Applicants must be willing to work collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a cooperative and productive fashion.
+ You must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.


Ideally, your background would also include:

+ We seek applicants versed in estimation theory with experience developing and applying Extended Kalman Filters to navigation problems.
+ We are looking for applicants that have backgrounds in neural networks and machine learning techniques.
+ Experience applying inertial navigation and GPS navigation technologies to aerospace problems is desired.
+ Background in State Space Control system theory is desired.
+ Experience developing and applying guidance algorithms to spacecraft applications is desired.
+ Knowledge and experience with optimization techniques and Monte Carlo simulation methods is desired.
+ Current and active DOE Q-level clearance, or a current DoD Security clearance at a minimum level of Secret.

Department Description:

The Navigation Guidance and Control (NGC) Department 5442 provides technology solutions and support to both Offensive and Defensive Military Systems development projects within the Integrated Military Systems Program at Sandia. Our primary mission is applied Systems Engineering for complex aerospace flight applications. Hardware and software technologies are developed, integrated, and tested to provide flight control solutions for missiles and hypersonic reentry platforms. Typically, these systems support the Missile Defense Agency, Army, Navy, and other Department of Defense Agencies. Our applications cover a broad spectrum of applications; from advanced aerodynamically controlled vehicles dropped from aircraft, to maneuvering hypersonic warheads, to ballistic missile systems. All the activities require the extensive use of real time embedded computers and custom real-time software for the realization of affiliated fully-integrated flight control system solutions.

The NGC group is a multi-disciplinary team and is significantly involved in modeling and simulation activities in support of these same application areas, as well as activities for the Sandia Space Mission Program. We are also significantly involved in advanced Science and Technology pursuits which create the foundation for future flight test applications. The department strives to provide leadership to the Laboratory and the Nation in the creative development, use, and application of both NGC and mod/sim technologies. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.
