We are seeking a highly motivated Product Design Engineer (PDE) with a passion for product design and development.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Create, modify, and evaluate complex component and system definition by implementing and integrating advanced design solutions.
+ Lead the design of three-dimensional models and detailed drawings of complex objects and systems.Present and justify designs to clients.
+ Independently determine or gather product requirements and apply new concepts and options to product design.
+ Utilize three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) software to develop and propose mechanical designs and perform complex analysis and review various designs and applications.
+ Analyze data and results to improve designs and develop new methods and concepts.

You may be interviewed and/or hired into one of several design engineering organizations at Sandia National Labs.


+ Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant discipline plus 8 years or relevant experience; or, equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
+ Experience using CAD software for complex 3D solid modeling and mechanical drawing generation


+ Experience using PTC-Creo software for mechanical engineering and design of complex designs and large assemblies.
+ Demonstrated ability in applying mechanical engineering design principles to formulate design concepts and meet product requirements.
+ Application of complex principles of tolerance analysis and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) based on experience, training, or certification such as ASME GDTP Senior level.
+ Demonstrated ability to perform analysis and calculations (stress, thermal, material properties, Etc.) to ensure that requirements are met and to optimize designs.
+ Experience using a product data management system to manage CAD files.
+ Application of alternative/advanced manufacturing methods for mechanical hardware.
+ Application of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly principles.
+ Demonstrated successful teamwork, excellent communication skills (oral and written), and consistent demonstration of good behaviors.
+ Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products.
+ Knowledge and understanding of the NW engineering systems and the NNSA product realization process.
+ Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a diverse team environment.
+ Active Security Clearance.
+ Extensive experience in a lead designer role (both individually and as a team leader).
+ Proven ability to mentor and develops staff and develop effective working relationships with peers.
+ Complete complex tolerance analysis using CETOL (or equivalent) software for 3D tolerance analysis.
+ Be a recognized technical expert in mechanical design or engineering, as evidenced by sharing ones expertise with others, being consulted for technical opinions, or being asked by Design Engineering clients to solve complex mechanical design issues.
+ Participate in corporate or industry-wide training, meetings, and/or conferences (PTC LiveWorks, Interoperability Conference, Etc.) and share knowledge to improve Design Engineering.

Department Description:

Sandia's Design Engineering Group consists of multiple mechanical design departments that provide design engineering services using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software such as PTC Creo and other 3D modeling tools. We partner with engineering teams across the lab to produce innovative design solutions based on high-quality CAD models and drawings. We ensure fit, form, and function using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), while ensuring manufacturability and maintainability of designs. We determine the physical characteristics of the product including: geometric form, interface features, manufacturing specifications, processes, and assembly instructions. We communicate design options and recommended approaches to product development teams, stakeholders, and manufacturing partners. We apply technical judgment based upon engineering principles in the design and development of innovative products in support of our Nations security programs. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.
