Job Title: Principal Technical Leader - Nuclear Maintenance Applications Center (NMAC)

Job Summary and Description:

Plans, designs, and controls the progress of complex project work within the technical department to meet member/client objectives; prepares and presents research reports. Significant customer interface component with ability to lead research programs. Manages medium level projects without direct people management responsibilities.

• Provides high-level engineering efforts to support requirements in development and design and provides guidance to junior staff

• Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work.

• Coordinates and facilitates technical engineering related communications with the client

• Leads proposal efforts and new promotional work.

• Preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations. Acts as technical specialist for projects or project tasks.

• Continuing to lead national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations.

• Works independently on technical activities without direct supervision



Advanced degree in science/engineering or equivalent experience required


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• 10-15 or more years of research and development project and promotional experience, including development of advanced concepts or equivalent experience.

• Ability to recognize strategic issues and projects and build collaborative and successfully complete projects.

• Experience in successful proposal preparation, and marketing activities.

• Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives using creative imaginative solutions.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Continuing to increase depth/breadth in multiple technical areas and recognized as a subject matter expert

• Individual contributor

• Communicates project results to advisors and members, may communicate project status to Sector Council

The EPRI NMAC Program is responsible for conducting research supporting nuclear plant equipment reliability. The areas of research include, but are not limited to:

  • Mechanical maintenance preventive and predictive maintenance methodologies and recommendations
  • Equipment Reliability processes and implementation
  • Mechanical component engineering and maintenance strategies


This position provides an opportunity for someone with maintenance and/or engineering experience to contribute to the improvement of the maintenance, engineering, and Equipment Reliability (ER) activities of nuclear power plants worldwide through innovative research and development. 


Job Functions:


The incumbent will manage research and development projects in the above listed areas with a concentration on mechanical components, maintenance preventive processes, and ER strategies.  The principal technical leader will also focus on knowledge capture and transfer for the assigned areas. The individual will be expected to continue ongoing research projects and also develop new research opportunities. The successful candidate will be expected to have strong communication and project management skills to present and articulate concepts and plans to all levels of plant staff and management.  Other specific skills include being able to:


  • Present and solicit input on research strategies and plans from EPRI technical committees comprised of worldwide nuclear utility owners, and broad members of the stakeholder community including but not limited to INPO, NRC, ASME, IAEA, NEI,  Industry User Groups, and committees.
  • Communicate project and research strategies and results, written and verbal, to EPRI team members and to EPRI membership through presentations, guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops, and conferences.
  • Manage multiple research projects independently and effectively to achieve high technical value to member utilities, and the public.
  • Organize and lead international technical meetings and workshops.
  • Lead and participate in visits to member nuclear plant sites worldwide.
  • Oversee development of, contribute to, publish, and present technical papers in areas of expertise.
  • Maintain awareness of technical innovations in area of expertise and be able to integrate these into projects as a means of advancing new technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Pattern Recognition into the nuclear power industry.
  • Assure that all projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Must be willing to travel nationally and internationally as necessary to support EPRI and Member Utilities.
  • Maintain technical expertise, develop national and international technical networks with consultants, academia and research organizations.


Ideal Candidate:


The ideal candidate would possess detailed knowledge of and have working experience related to mechanical component maintenance practices in nuclear power plants. This skilled individual will work closely with nuclear utility members, government agencies, nuclear supply vendors, research contractors, and national laboratories in the course of their daily duties. The individual will also be expected to be self-motivated and work with other team members of NMAC as well as with other EPRI research organizations/programs working on similar projects. At times, the candidate may be expected to have responsibility for projects that may fall outside of the areas described above yet fall within the scope of the NMAC Program.


Useful skills and knowledge include:


  • Articulate with clear and concise verbal and written communication skills communicating concepts and plans at all levels of management.
  • Maintenance background, knowledge, and experience in a nuclear power plants.
  • Understanding of power plant equipment operation and maintenance strategies that support improved equipment reliability.  Senior Reactor Operator License or certification is a plus, but not required.
  • Demonstrate outstanding problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Able to work in a collaborative environment with diverse personnel and to resolve conflicts.
  • Must be able to travel at least 20% of the time, including travel abroad.
  • Effectively multitask, coordinate and facilitate technical mechanical maintenance and engineering-related communications with peers and clients, and apply scientific and engineering principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Knowledgeable of information sources in the utility industry including how to retrieve and use technical information (INPO ICES, NRC information, NEI Bulletins, etc.)
  • Experience as a manager or supervisor in maintenance, operations, or engineering organizations is required.


Education Level and Years of Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or related Sciences) and a minimum of ten years’ experience with power plant systems. Prior experience working in the nuclear power industry is required.
