We are seeking a Postdoc to work with a multi-disciplinary team on wind turbine rotor design related research. The position includes adding improved capabilities in existing rotor design tools for structural and aerodynamic design and optimization of wind turbine blades. The design tool development will involve implementing advanced optimization routines for parallel computing and includes coupling multiple Sandia-developed tools. The position involves working with a dynamic team of scientists and researchers and wind energy analysts working to solve challenging problems that move the wind industry forward in support of the Department of Energy mission.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work on assigned computational model and algorithmic development and implementation tasks, as well as tasks related to the design of wind turbine blades of the future;
+ Utilize experience in areas of wind turbine blade design, blade design tools, finite element analysis and/or optimization and parallel computing.

Required:

+ PhD in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or an equivalent field;
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance.

Desired:

+ Experience in one or more of the following areas:

- Wind turbine blade design or optimization methods
- Solid mechanics, structural dynamics, and/or knowledge of the fundamentals of wind turbine aerodynamics
- Development of engineering codes
- Technical background including wind turbine aeroelastic design and analysis
+ Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to identify research objectives and develop clear solutions to complex problems while using sound judgment in drawing conclusions;
+ Ability to work well in teams with diverse skills and backgrounds and be proactive and creative in solving problems that arise;
+ Excellent time-management skills including the ability to prioritize work and set and meet reasonable deadlines.

Department Description:

The Wind Energy Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of wind technologies. This department is responsible for all aspects of wind turbine blade design, wake physics, system reliability, system integration, verification and validation of performance models, and model uncertainty quantification. For power systems research, the department conducts R&D in support of integrating wind energy into transmission and distribution grids, and microgrids through modeling and simulation activities. Department activities range from computer based design and analysis, lab testing of components, to full scale testing of wind blades at the SWiFT test site, near Lubbock, TX.

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD needs to have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
