The Primary Standards Lab at Sandia/NM seeks to hire a Postdoctoral appointee that has a strong background in optical measurement systems, image processing algorithms, multivariate calculus, and programming\. The goal of this project is to evaluate error propagation in 3D image reconstruction generated from a thermo\-optical microscope\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Use, modify and troubleshoot low\-noise optical measurement apparatus\. This includes data acquisition, instrument communication, and apparatus optimization and reconfiguration for enhanced signal to noise\.
+ Analyze, develop, implement, and evaluate models and algorithms for 3D image reconstruction\. Uncertainty analysis on 3D reconstructed images\.
+ Design, fabricate, and characterize samples in a cleanroom environment\. Example operations include: sample cleaning, photolithography, metal deposition, AFM and SEM characterization\.

Required:

+ PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering or Science, Applied Physics or Mathematics, or other related STEM technical areas, conferred within five years prior to employment\.
+ Experience in developing or using software for data analysis with least\-squares or other fitting algorithms\.
+ Experience performing original research, demonstrated through a record of invention, original publication in top\-tier journals, and conference papers and presentations\.

Desired:

+ Expertise in the design and test of experiments\.
+ Experience with image processing algorithms, inverse problems, and nonlinear processes\.
+ Experience with nanoscale thermal physics, semiconductor physics, phonon modeling and/or related topics\.
+ Experience with uncertainty analysis and propagation of error in experiments\.
+ Experience with cleanroom processes and micro\-characterization techniques such as SEM and AFM\.
+ Experience with pump\-probe or 3 measurements and data analysis\.
+ Familiarity with laboratory optical bench, optics handling, electronics, optoelectronics, and safe use of lasers, able to design and carry out laser\-based optical experiments
+ Self\-motivated and committed to life\-long learning\. Strong communication skills with ability to solve challenging problems and work independently and in a team environment\.

Department Description:

Department 9144, Primary Physical Standards, provides calibration support to the Nuclear Security Enterprise, including support for SNL research and production organizations\. Department 9144 includes multiple projects and consists of parameters such as flow, humidity, leaks, vacuum, radiation, optics, temperature and dimensional measurement\. Primary Physical Standards, maintains a wide variety of measurement expertise and consults on technical problems, calibrates reference standards, and assists in technical oversight of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Weapons Complex contractor standards laboratories\. The overall calibration program is accredited by the NIST National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
