Are you passionate about leading\-edge experimental research of the growth and properties of nanostructured conductor/dielectric composite thin films? If so, consider applying for this Postdoctoral Appointee opportunity which focuses on understanding the transport physics as a function of the compositional and nanostructural film properties\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Perform creative investigations correlating the growth of controlled thin film nanostructured composites with critical electronic transport properties
+ Engage in other laboratory activities related to the synthesis and characterization of thin film materials such as carbon nanotubes, semiconductors, nanoporous\-carbon, etc\.
+ Demonstrate leadership and self\-motivation within a collaborative R&D environment
+ Work on other advanced thin film materials and processes for advanced applications
+ Contribute to the publication of findings in leading journals and conference presentations

Required:

+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in experimental materials science, physics, engineering, or a related discipline
+ Experience with experimental thin film materials science research
+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a record of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at scientific conferences

Desired:

+ Experience performing/evaluating DC and RF electrical transport measurements on thin film samples, including fabricating low resistivity contacts
+ Experience in thin film deposition methods \(e\.g\. sputtering, pulsed\-laser deposition\)
+ Experience with structural measurements \(e\.g\. electron microscopies, x\-ray diffraction, stress\)
+ Ability to develop and maintain collaboration with leaders in the scientific community
+ Curiosity about the world and a strong interest in connecting one's research to the larger context of science, society, and national security
+ Effective communication and interpersonal skills that cultivate effective scientific collaborations with a diverse population of researchers
+ Creative problem\-solving abilities and effective time management skills

Department Description:

The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts collaborative leading\-edge research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enables the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions\. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer\-reviewed, high\-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings\. Our main research focus is directed along three thrusts:

99. Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications \(including energy storage and corrosion\)
99. Magnetic, Dielectric and Electronic Materials Science and Applications \(including ferroics and composites\)
99. Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications \(i\.e\., for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, membranes, water treatment, and catalysis\)

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship\.

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.
