This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.


We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee, to work on electrochemical materials chemistry and battery development for the Electronic, Optical and Nanomaterials Department\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Contribute to a multidisciplinary, materials\-focused research effort
+ Participate in technical meetings at the national level
+ Responsible for daily experimental research
+ Publish in innovative research high\-level peer\-reviewed leading technical journals
+ Present cutting\-edge research at technical conferences


+ Ph\.D\. in electrochemistry, materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering or a closely related STEM field; received within the last five years
+ Laboratory experience in electrochemistry, electrochemical characterization, battery assembly and testing
+ Record of independent research, publications and conference presentations
+ Record of interdisciplinary research collaborations
+ Ability obtain and maintain a DoE L Clearance


+ Strong Academic background
+ Extensive laboratory experience working with a wide range of electrochemical synthesis
+ Experience with characterization techniques as well as a strong background in laboratory\-scale battery assembly and testing
+ Technical experience and a proven publication record in the area of battery testing, ideally related to sodium, lithium, or similar batteries
+ Knowledgeable about adapting electrochemical testing procedures and materials to accommodate new technical developments
+ Familiarity with and a willingness to explore connections between materials science and electrochemistry
+ Technical skills related to programming, data processing, and instrument
+ Strong laboratory skills
+ Ability to engage and to contribute to multiple programs
+ Ability to interact with team members of diverse technical backgrounds
+ Desire to conduct independent, focused research\.
+ Candidates should be highly motivated, team\-oriented individuals

Department Description:

The Electronic, Optical and Nanomaterials Department provides innovation in the design, synthesis and development of advanced, multifunctional materials to satisfy unique needs in electronic, optical, electrochemical, structural and selective\-molecular\-binding applications\. We control chemical and structural characteristics, from the nano\- to the micro\-scale, in inorganic and hybrid systems to explore new material constructs and strategies aimed at optimizing and expanding material performance\. Our efforts support DOE Defense Programs, DOE Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, DOE Electricity Distribution and Energy Reliability offices, other federal agencies and industry\. In addition, we pursue partnerships with universities and establish ongoing collaborations with other experts in the field to leverage our research investments while participating in, and contributing to, the international research community\. Research thrusts include nanoparticle, nanofiber, and atomic layer deposited materials, thin films, passive and active materials for electronic, magnetic, photonic, electromechanical, and fluidic microsystems, self\-assembly, and colloid chemistry\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship\.
