This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.


Are you looking to do innovative and creative electrochemical research? You could be the Postdoctoral Appointee we are seeking to partner with a diverse team, developing the next generation of redox flow batteries.You will be working on state-of-the-art electrolytes and energy storage materials for redox flow batteries and grid scale electrochemical energy storage.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

Design and evaluate novel electrochemical materials for advanced flow battery systems

Contribute to a multidisciplinary electrochemical and materials-focused research effort

Perform both independent and team-based daily experimental research, especially as it pertains to energy storage materials testing

Publish and present innovative research at high-level peer-reviewed leading technical journals

Present state of the art research at technical conferences and meetings

+ You will have a PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering or a related science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) field.
+ Laboratory experience in electrochemical characterization of materials
+ Record of independent research, publications and conference presentations
+ Able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance


+ You should have a strong academic background
+ Experience using a glovebox and handling air-sensitive materials
+ Experience with laboratory-scale battery and/or flow battery assembly and testing
+ Ability to design and adapt electrochemical systems to integrate new materials
+ Knowledgeable about adapting electrochemical testing procedures and materials to accommodate new technical developments
+ Familiarity with and a willingness to explore connections between materials science and electrochemistry
+ Ability to interact with team members of diverse technical backgrounds
+ Backgrounds indicative of self-motivation with the ability to communicate and perform effectively in dynamic team setting

Department Description:

The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts collaborative leading-edge research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enables the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings. Our main research focus is directed along three thrusts:1. Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications (including energy storage and corrosion)2. Magnetic, Dielectric and Electronic Materials Science and Applications (including ferroics and composites)3. Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications (i.e., for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, membranes, water treatment, and catalysis)

Security Clearance:
