We are seeking a POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTEE

We have a great opportunity for a postdoctoral appointee to join our compound semiconductor microelectronics research and development team! We work in a highly collaborative teaming environment to conduct III-V compound semiconductor research and for a wide variety of optoelectronic and microelectronic devices with direct, relevant impact to our national security mission. The selected candidate will apply semiconductor device expertise to the design, execution, characterization, and analysis of electrical and thermal stress experiments for reliability assessments on such devices. The goal is to support state-of-the-art research and development with commensurate reliability capability sought at assessments of wide bandgap compound semiconductor devices for power electronics. Testing, tester development, and degradation analysis are customized to establish a fundamental understanding of life assessments and failure mechanisms for these wide bandgap devices. Success will be accomplished through a combination of individual contributions and collaborations with other Sandia technical staff, typically in small, lean, multi-disciplinary project teams.

This position will require owning, planning, executing, and detailing tasks that are linked to technical goals and accomplishments. Delivery on negotiated project commitments and all ownership responsibilities are critical. Technical activities may include: developing a reliability test capability for hard switching in power conversion circuits; design of experiments and analysis; testing and associating test results with reliability metrics; and characterizing failure modes and analyzing degradation mechanisms. Responsibilities will include reporting results through internal and external publications and presentations, collaborating with internal and external customers to understand and meet requirements and develop new business opportunities.

Required:

+ PhD conferred in the last 5 years, in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related STEM field
+ Strong background in semiconductor electronics device research and development
+ Record of publication and innovation, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
+ Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE clearance

Desired:

+ Excellent academic credentials
+ Research background in wide bandgap semiconductor (e.g., GaN, AlGaN, SiC, etc.) electronic devices
+ Experience in device level reliability research
+ Experience in device/material characterization and failure analysis
+ Experience with test and measurement equipment, interfacing, and data acquisition

Department Description:

The III-V Microelectronics Department is responsible for the research and technology foundation of Group III-V compound semiconductors within the Microsystems Science, Technology and Components Center that enables the creation, development and delivery of microelectronic components addressing high-performance, harsh-environment communication, sensing and control problems. We work throughout the Technology Readiness Level range from TRL1 (basic principles observed and reported) to TRL6 (representative of the deliverable demonstrated in relevant environments), and partner as appropriate to assure the delivery of qualified products to our customers. Our Department focus in working from TRL3 (key elements demonstrated analytically or experimentally) to TRL4/5 (key elements demonstrated in a controlled/relevant environment) offers value to customers interested in the feasibility of proposed microtechnology or microsystems integration solutions to their problems, and to customers who need a trusted partner or supplier to build and deliver on stated performance, size, weight, power and cost benefits relative to alternatives. Meeting project landmark and delivery commitments are critical to success in our R&D business. Core Department capabilities include electronic modeling and simulation; epitaxial design, growth and characterization; rad-hard microelectronic device and circuit design, microfabrication, characterization, and reliability; and high-reliability microelectronic product design, characterization, and delivery for high-consequence system applications.

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
