This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

You could be the postdoctoral appointee the Component Science and Mechanics Department is seeking to work on research projects in the field of nonlinear structural dynamics. You will collaborate with a diverse and broad class of professionals including mechanical engineers, analysts, experimentalists, mathematicians and computer scientists to develop new methodologies and algorithms to analyze and understand the nonlinear dynamical response of engineering structures under complex loading conditions.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Use high performance computing platforms and massively parallel finite element software to simulate nonlinear structures.
+ Develop new numerical algorithms to solve dynamical systems
+ Investigate model order reduction strategies to enable efficient simulations of large-scale engineering models.
+ Work closely with the experimental engineers to develop test plans to validate new theories and/or predictions from numerical models.
+ Present novel developments both internally and externally at various meetings, seminars, and conferences.

Required:

+ Ph.D. conferred within the last 5 years in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, or other related fields
+ Experience in structural mechanics and dynamics
+ Experience in computer programming
+ Record of publication and innovation, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Desired:

+ Experience with development and implementation of numerical methods, and model order reduction methods
+ Research experience with nonlinear dynamical systems
+ Knowledge in contact mechanics and associated numerical algorithms
+ Knowledge of vibration testing and modal analysis
+ Ability to work independently

Department Description:

The Component Science and Mechanics Department provides state-of-the-art mechanics/dynamics research and science-based engineering solutions for component development. Computational and physical simulations, including solid mechanics and structural dynamics for both linear and nonlinear systems, are utilized in a multidisciplinary teaming environment. Focus areas for the department include nonlinear finite element analysis, nonlinear dynamics and vibration, interface mechanics, fracture mechanics, constitutive materials modeling including viscoelasticity, development of reduced order models, margin assessment and uncertainty propagation, and modeling of manufacturing processes including welding and additive manufacturing.

Security Clearance:
