Are you passionate about research related to process metallurgy? If so, consider applying to join our Additive Manufacturing team as a Postdoctoral Appointee\. In this role, you will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with other inter\-disciplinary research groups within Sandia to develop new research opportunities and projects\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Plan and perform experiments, install, repair, and maintain diagnostic tools, collect and analyze data with the goal of understanding the process\-structure\-properties relationships of additively manufactured or thermal sprayed metals and alloys
+ Perform design necessary to support projects or experiments
+ Publish journal articles and present work at local and national conferences


+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related discipline
+ Experience or academic training in metallurgy research and development
+ Experience with crafting and conducting experiments
+ History of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific and/or technical conferences
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance


+ Experience with one or more Metallurgical Processes: Solidification, Welding, Additive Manufacturing, Soldering, Brazing, Thermal Spray, Thermomechanical Processing
+ Knowledge of High Entropy Alloys
+ Knowledge of solidification processing of metals and alloys
+ Knowledge of physical and mechanical metallurgy concepts and theories
+ Knowledge of thermodynamic principles and modeling
+ Experience with materials characterization
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Department Description:

The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, thermal spray deposition, cold spray deposition, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories\. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation\. Thin film properties can also be characterized\. Thermal spray capabilities include both conventional \(flame, plasma, twin\-wire arc, HVOF\) and advanced technologies: cold spray and low\-pressure plasma spray\. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso\-scale devices, electrical discharge machining \(EDM\), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro\-metrology, as well as technical consulting\. Additive manufacturing encompasses both direct write \(aerosol ink jet printing, extrusion casting, and conformal printing\) and metal additive \(powder bed and LENS\)\. Our staff supports a variety of programs and engages in providing collaborative, creative materials science and systems\-based engineering solutions\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship\.

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.
