The Biological and Chemical Sensors Department is seeking a dedicated candidate for a Postdoctoral Researcher Position working with a team of scientists and engineers on a variety of sensor projects. Work in the chemical detection area will focus on developing microfabricated and miniaturized sensor systems for the detection of chemical warfare agents, narcotics, and explosives. Sensor systems to monitor disease, infection, or the physiological states of biological systems will also be investigated.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Use miniature gas chromatography systems, micro resonators, ion mobility spectrometers, and other micro sensor technologies to develop detection systems for target compounds of national security concern;
+ Perform system or component-level design, fabrication, and testing of sensor technologies;
+ Analyze data using programs such as Matlab or statistical analysis software;
+ Use laboratory-scale analytical chemistry equipment to validate system operation or identify target compounds in environmental or biological samples.

Required:

+ PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or a related field;
+ Experience with micro sensors, microfluidics, sensors, or biosensors;
+ Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Desired:

+ Familiarity with microfabrication processes and procedures;
+ Knowledge of chemical sensor coatings and surface modifications;
+ Experience using analytical chemistry equipment;
+ Finite element modeling (FEM) and computer aided design (CAD) experience;
+ Proven experience in the design, fabrication and testing of portable sensor systems;
+ Programming experience in Labview, Matlab, or C;
+ Experience in laboratory ownership including writing procedures and detailing environmental, safety and health related items.

Department Description:

The Biological and Chemical Sensors Department at Sandia National Laboratories specializes in miniature sensors and sensor-based system for a variety of sensing applications including chemical, biological, and explosives. These sensors and systems can be built into wearable, handheld, UAV, or fixed/installed formats. We have a strong emphasis on nano, micro, and mesoscale fabrication in our R&D including the capability to integrate custom electronics developed in Sandias MESA facility. To support our chemical vapor detection effort, we are developing a state-of-the-art test and evaluation system to challenge a variety of sensors and systems. In biological detection, we have acoustic- and electrochemical-based portable systems for cell lysis and highly specific and sensitive detection of DNA, RNA, proteins and metabolites. We also have state-of-the-art microbiology capabilities to aid in biological sensor development. Our technologies are designed to be non-invasive or minimally invasive, and easy to use in the field or at the point of care.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
