Job Description
The Process Engineering team in the Radiological Materials and Detection (RM&D) group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory-Battelle is looking for a Nuclear Materials Processing and Testing Engineer. The RM&D group is a world leader in nuclear materials development, testing and procurement for specialized nuclear applications. The successful candidate will have a broad background that allows them to team with material scientists, nuclear design engineers, and industrial partners to direct the procurement, development, and testing of nuclear materials. The successful candidate will also begin developing skills to independently propose, sell, execute, and ultimately lead tasks and projects. The primary area of technical performance will be in the area of materials testing and fabrication, with a primary focus on developing test methods and fabrication techniques suitable for use in the nuclear reactor industry.

This position will be responsible for helping to develop and execute experimental plans to evaluate the performance of various ceramic and metal materials prior to, during, and post irradiation. Material categories include polycrystalline ceramics and nuclear grade metals (stainless steels and zirconium alloys). The incumbent will also be responsible for establishing/maintaining capabilities for the production and acceptance of larger volumes of established nuclear components.

Job Description:
- Lead of technical products.
- Make key contributions in setting technical direction.
- Contribute to the organization through mentorship of junior staff.
- Select and develop technical approaches on assignments with occasional oversight on complex problems.
- Principal investigator or co-PI on tasks, while integrating capabilities of work team members.
- Generate new ideas for proposals and business development opportunities while leading development of technical section of small to medium proposals.
- Serve as a role model for quality, safety, and security.
The candidate should be comfortable working in a rigorous quality assurance environment and understand constraints associated with irradiation of test materials and examination of materials post irradiation. The duties include:
- Preparation of procedures, process travelers, inspection/test instructions, and receiving inspection reports to document the fabrication, inspection, and testing of components and test articles
- Participation in QA surveillances and audits
- Act as the Measuring & Test Equipment (M&TE) Custodian for large inventory of calibrated equipment and standards
- Preparation of statements of work and purchase requisitions and serve as the Technical Oversight Representative (TOR) for the majority of the goods and services required by the TTP
- The candidate will be a primary point of contact for a specialized testing/fabrication facility. Job duties will include:
- Material Custodian including the control and accounting for thousands of components, samples, and test articles
- Material Balance Area (MBA) Manager of the facility responsible for tracking the storage and use of accountable materials (e.g. lithium-6 enriched materials).
- Responsible for the daily operations including ES&H, chemical and waste management, security, maintenance, visitor access control, and shipping/receiving of components and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
- BS/BA with 5 years of experience or MS/MA with 3 years of experience or PhD with 1 year of experience
- U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance are required based on project and client requirements.

Preferred Qualifications
- Preferred fields include Nuclear, Mechanical, Chemical, Metallurgical, Ceramic or Materials engineering.
- MS with 5+ years of experience or PhD with 1-2 years of experience
- Work experience in one or more of the following areas: understanding manufacturing processes for the nuclear industry, establishing analytical chemistry capabilities to support product acceptance working under Nuclear Reactor Grade quality assurance programs, experience working with classified projects, and/or experience with nuclear reactor operations.
