Nuclear Analysis Engineer (Early/Mid-Career)

On any given day, you may be called on to:
+ Perform routine laboratory operations including sample analysis, instrument calibration, Laboratory Information Management System administration, quality control and internal assessments.
+ Conduct special projects and laboratory improvement initiatives and assist the program leader with program development and day-to-day laboratory operational management.
+ Serve on technical teams to accomplish laboratory improvement projects that will keep the laboratory up-to-date with corporate and laboratory accreditation requirements and serve the diverse needs of Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) internal customers, particularly in the areas of Environment, Safety and Health.
+ Interact with customers to develop data quality objectives, assist them with the interpretation of radiological measurement data results and communicate technical information to them and other stakeholders.
+ Partner with SNL researchers and Radiological Protection Sample Diagnostics team members to plan and provide customized laboratory analyses on special research and development projects.
+ Assist with the ongoing Laboratory Information Management System development project to automate new analytical methods and laboratory process and ensure new vendor software features are instituted into operations.
+ Work on special assignments to benefit the larger Radiation Protection Department and sister Radiation Protection Operations Departments.
+ Serve as a member of the Federal Radiological Monitoring and Assessment Center Laboratory Analysis Division.
- Duties would include serving on working groups to develop processes for the management and laboratory analysis of samples that would be collected in large-scale radiological incidents. Duties also include technical advisory and operational roles for laboratory analysis functions during national-level nuclear emergencies or training exercises.
This position may require the occasional travel to conferences and meetings to present technical information.
Required:
+ Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, Health Physics or a closely related scientific field.
+ Ability to obtain DOE Radiological Worker II qualification.
+ Operational experience with radiological laboratory equipment, including gamma spectrometers, gas proportional counters, and liquid scintillation counters.
+ Understanding of radiation interactions with matter and other fundamental radiation detection principles.
+ Ability obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Desired:
+ Experience with gamma and alpha spectroscopy data interpretation and analysis including nuclide identification and quantification.
+ Experience with performing calibrations on gamma spectrometers (including mathematical efficiency modeling), liquid scintillation counters and gas proportional counters.
+ Experience with troubleshooting and repair of radiation laboratory equipment hardware and software.
+ Experience with configuring instrument control software for laboratory measurement equipment.
+ Experience with databases and reporting software (e.g. SQL Server/Oracle, Crystal Reports, etc.).
+ Experience with laboratory Quality Assurance processes and conduct of operations.
+ Participation in external agency proficiency testing programs (e.g. MAPEP, FERN, etc.).
+ Experience in laboratory method verification and validation.
+ Ability to clearly convey thoughts, concepts and directions both verbally and in writing.
+ Self-motivated and strong problem-solving abilities.
+ Ability to work on a technical team to solve complex and loosely-defined problems.
+ Experience with the standard Windows IT environment including MS Office products.
