We are seeking a Microsystem Packaging Scientist/Engineer to join our team as a technical expert and project leader\. Are you passionate about conducting research for interesting and challenging projects with partners from engineering groups throughout Sandia? If so, you will want to consider applying for this opportunity to work with a dynamic team comprised of engineering and technical authorities with a proven track record of producing high\-quality prototypes\. You will lead the development of proof\-of\-concept designs, modification, prototyping, and performance testing, in collaboration with Sandia design and production engineers in nuclear weapon, national security, nuclear non\-proliferation, and energy and climate programs, to name just a few\. Our world\-class microsystem packaging team offers the creative ability to clarify and understand customers needs, work closely with them to devise innovative solutions, and then produce high quality prototype hardware using an extensive equipment capability\.

On any given day, you may be called on to use capabilities in the following areas to produce high\-quality prototypes:

+ Mechanical design \(Solidworks, AutoCAD, SurfCAM, LinkCAD, and TransCAD\)
+ Photolithography, including patterning of substrates with a variety of photoresist materials for deposition of thin film metals
+ Inspection, assembly, documentation, soldering, hermetic sealing, and device testing on a variety of packaging media \(ceramic, plastic, or hybrid\)
+ Low\-Temperature Cofired Ceramic \(LTCC\) technology
+ Microsystem prototyping & assembly, including:
+ Design, prototype, and test; thick film processing; screen printing; screen development; punching; lamination; collation; firing; wafer and substrate dicing; die attach and interconnect; wirebonding; general assembly; CO2 laser processing; solder assembly; and printed wiring assembly design and fabrication


+ Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline plus five years experience
+ Experience developing solutions for engineering problems
+ Experience in a dynamic team environment
+ Good communication skills as evidenced by a record of publication of results in memos, reports, internal presentations, peer\-reviewed journals, and/or external presentations at scientific conferences
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance


+ Masters or PhD degree in engineering or physical science
+ Demonstrated dedication to producing high\-quality results using good laboratory techniques and focused attention to detail
+ Dedication to continuous learning in science and engineering
+ Experience in the functional technology areas described in the job duties
+ Effective interpersonal skills for giving presentations, preparing reports, writing articles, and explaining the important aspects of technical work to customers

Department Description:

The Microsystem Packaging and Polymer Processing Department \(Organization 1833\) specializes in two areas: microsystem packaging and polymer processing to enable success for a diverse set of customers throughout Sandia\.

Our microsystem packaging team develops prototypes and proof\-of concept devices that employ a wide variety of materials including ceramics, metals, polymers, and semiconductors\. We provide expertise in lithography, laser processing, hybrid fabrication, microelectronic assembly/packaging, optical packaging, and in many cases the combination of these capabilities\. We also perform advanced research and development in the fundamental science and engineering areas relevant to development of packaging solutions that allow electronic, MEMS\-based, and optical components to meet demanding environmental requirements\.

Our polymer processing team provides materials expertise, processing expertise, and prototype fabrication capabilities for a wide variety of organic applications, including high\-performance polymers, gels, encapsulants, foams, adhesives, and composites\. We practice concurrent engineering with designers who are involved in the application of thermosetting, thermoplastic, and composite materials\. We routinely use these materials to join, package, and provide structural support to satisfy demanding electrical, mechanical, and environmental design requirements\. We support research on adhesion and on thermally and electrically conductive materials, support stress and fracture mechanics modeling efforts with experiments, perform emergency production when necessary, and work with our customers to find the right material for the application\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\.
