Are you passionate about working in Metallurgical Engineering? Do you want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for nation's security? We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee who will be responsible for conducting basic and applied research in physical and process metallurgy, with a focus on microstructural evolution and characterization of precious metal alloys in multi-material assemblies.

Your duties will include:

+ Planning and directing fundamental and applied research, support engineering applications, writing technical papers, reports and specifications, and presenting results at program meetings and professional conferences
+ Conducting short term problem solving and failure analysis, including travel, in support of customer needs


You have, or are pursuing a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Welding, Metallurgical Engineering or a related discipline and possess a bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM)

Your background includes experience in physical metallurgy concepts as they relate to metal processing, microstructure, and property relationships

Strong communication skills as evidenced by a track record of both written professional publications and oral presentations

You can obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance


+ Passionate about broadening and deepening your scientific research capabilities through a challenging, high-profile research and engineering support program
+ Strong teaming and interpersonal skills and an interest in working well with other all-star contributors
+ Dedicated to customer support, including a proven ability to understand and meet their needs
+ Experience with characterizing the effects of thermal processes on alloy microstructure and interdiffusion between materials
+ Knowledge and experience with materials joining concepts and specifications
+ Project management and development experience
+ Experience with materials testing and characterization techniques
+ Experience with process control concepts and techniques
+ Experience with Gleeble metallurgical process simulation

Department Description:

The Metallurgy and Materials Joining Department is the principal organization for metallurgical and joining research and engineering support throughout the Laboratories. Our expertise covers a broad range of experimental and predictive capabilities that apply fundamental process, physical and mechanical metallurgy principles. Specific technical areas include welding and soldering, special brazing and diffusion bonding, and mechanical behavior. The scientific focus is on materials structures, properties, performance and reliability. We support a variety of national security programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, creative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions. We value a diverse Team

Security Clearance:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
