We are seeking highly motivated mechanical engineer to contribute in a multi-disciplinary team with multiple partners, organizations, and collaborations.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Plans, conceives, conducts, or manages research and development of metal additive manufacturing for Sandia's customers and sponsors
+ Develop and lead research programs on the process, properties, and performance of AM Metals
+ Write proposals related to advanced manufacturing technologies
+ Communicate results as presentations, reports, and technical papers.
+ Work as part of a team comprised of technologists, students, post docs, and staff to meet deliverables
+ Provide consultation in support of Sandia's Missions

Required:

+ Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related field, plus a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
+ Experience with Design for Manufacturing and/or Precision Engineering
+ Experience with manufacturing and process characterization techniques
+ Experience writing technical proposals
+ Experience leading Metal Additive Manufacturing research programs
+ Experience publishing papers in peer reviewed journals and presenting research at technical conferences
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance

Desired:

+ Hands-on experience with Additive Manufacturing of Metals using powder bed methods
+ Experience leading and contributing to multi-disciplinary teams with multiple stakeholders, organizations, and collaborations.
+ Excellent communication skills
+ Able to work independently and as part of a team

Department Description:

Our team provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, thermal spray deposition, cold spray deposition, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation. Thin film properties can also be characterized. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso-scale devices, electrical discharge machining (EDM), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro-metrology, as well as technical consulting. Metal additive manufacturing capabilities include powder bed, LENS, and wire technologies. Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.
