We are seeking a R&D Manager to lead the Gas Phase Chemical Physics department. The department is focused on conducting world-leading fundamental science, with relevance to combustion, atmospheric chemistry, and a variety of Department of Energy (DOE) energy missions. Research activities include theoretical and experimental investigations of chemical dynamics, chemical kinetics, and the chemical structure of complex reacting systems such as combustion and heterogeneous catalysis. Spectroscopy in many forms, including advanced laser diagnostics are widely employed throughout the department to monitor chemical and physical evolution of reacting systems and a vigorous program of laser diagnostic development is integral to these efforts. Experimental research at Sandia laboratories is augmented by research conducted off-site at DOE user facility light sources. Programmatic funding is principally derived from the Basic Energy Sciences (BES) Office within the DOE Office of Science (SC), with additional funding from other agencies and from Laboratory-Directed Research & Development (LDRD). The department consists of about eight PhD technical staff, six technologists, about 15 post docs (including non-U.S. nationals) and an administrative assistant, plus several visiting students and researchers. The department has substantial collaborative research engagements both within Sandia and with a wide range of external partners from around the world.

The Department Managers responsibilities include personnel management, including hiring, performance and compensation review participation and coaching/mentoring; maintaining a safe, secure, creative, and productive work environment; managing Environment Safety & Health (ES&H) and security within the department; and budgeting oversight. Active engagement in the scientific community is encouraged and the department manager is expected to carry out program management and program development as part of the larger Physical Sciences management team.

+ Strong commitment to safety and security
+ Ability to hold a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance.

Desired:

+ At least two years experience leading multi-disciplinary, technically diverse research teams
+ Experience working in a national laboratory environment
+ Proven ability to motivate, coach, and mentor staff
+ Ability and experience in developing and growing programs in fundamental physical science research, including identifying sponsors and developing successful proposals
+ Direct experience and international recognition in theoretical and/or experimental research in chemical physics, physical chemistry or laser-based diagnostics
+ Experience working with DOE/SC program offices

Department Description:

The Gas Phase Chemical Physics Department is part of Sandia's Combustion Research Facility (CRF) in Livermore, California, where over 100 scientists, engineers, and technologists conduct basic and applied research to improve our nation's capabilities in gas-phase chemical physics. Under the principal sponsorship of the Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the Gas Phase Chemical Physics Department conducts fundamental experimental, theoretical, and modeling research to develop a foundational understanding of the complex chemical reactions that occur either directly in the gas phase or influenced by it. Research areas include chemical dynamics and spectroscopy, advanced diagnostics, ultrafast physics and chemistry, chemical kinetics, multi-phase chemical physics, high-pressure combustion, and gas-surface interactions.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
