We are seeking a R&D Manager to lead the Energy Nanomaterials Department, which consists of chemists, materials scientists, physicists, engineers, technologists, and interns who carry out research for a broad spectrum of customers and sponsors. You will work closely with the staff to ensure project alignment with current and anticipated customer needs and will also work to develop emerging areas to advance the Laboratories energy and national security mission objectives. You will engage with the broader Sandia materials science community across Laboratories to ensure that materials science resources, core competencies, and scientific capabilities are optimized and deployed to advance Sandias mission areas and strategic objectives.

Your essential duties will include:

+ Provides intellectual leadership and sets strategic directions for the department.
+ Understands the work of the organization and connects the work and expertise of the staff with current and potential programs and customers.
+ Promotes excellence by leading and coordinating specific deliverables, overall program and project plans, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements.
+ Ensures that enduring customer needs are met and that emerging needs are anticipated through the establishment and stewardship of trust-based relationships.
+ Applies organization knowledge and experience to independently evaluate work quality, performance, and alignment of results with customer expectations.
+ Leads members of the workforce within the organization, including hiring, professional development, and assessment and performance management, consistent with the mission of the organization.


You have the following:

+ Bachelors degree, or higher, in a relevant STEM discipline with at least eight years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of experience and education.
+ Engineering or scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
+ Experience building, leading, and developing, multi-disciplinary, technically diverse research teams across scientific fields and line and programmatic organizations;
+ Experience interacting with a variety of sponsors and customers to respond to enduring needs and to anticipate emerging requirements;
+ Ability to obtain a DOE Q-level security clearance.


You also have one, or more, of the following:

+ At least two years of proven leadership experience
+ Interpersonal skills
+ Research experience as evidenced by a strong publication record in materials science or a related discipline
+ Experience supporting the national security mission areas
+ Experience gaining and leading programs from a broad set of federal sponsors
+ Ability to identify, attract, recruit, mentor, and retain exceptional technical staff, and develop a leadership-class workforce
+ Ability to partner closely with technical staff and managers across scientific disciplines and organizations.
+ Experience in successfully leading a technical organization with operationally complex experimental facilities
+ Active DOE Q security clearance.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Department Description:

The Energy Nanomaterials Department (08341) is a research organization specializing in the design, development, synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials for energy and national security applications. Projects and capabilities in the Department's research portfolio include, but are not limited to: nanoporous materials for sensing, catalysis, energy harvesting, and gas storage; materials for energy and hydrogen storage; thermoelectrics; additive manufacturing; and comprehensive materials characterization capabilities including extensive electron microscopy, surface characterization, x-ray diffraction, and nanoindentation instrumentation. The Department supports a broad set of state-of-the-art research instruments and analytical equipment critical to program execution in support of Sandias missions. The Department is a key element in a diverse set of Materials Science organizations and resources, managed both locally and across the corporation. The Department partners broadly with other organizations and programs within Sandia and with many external institutions, taking advantage of its geographical proximity to other researchers and facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California.
