We are seeking a Laser/Optical Technologist to join our Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Team. Are you passionate about developing novel laser technologies using outstanding resources? Read on to learn more about this opportunity!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Interact with customers, other technologists, and staff supporting all of Sandia's missions.
+ Operate, repair, maintain, and modify the VarioScale laser assisted chemical etching tool. Its capabilities include localized etching of Si by laser scanning, the shaping of surfaces, in situ end-pointing for thickness control, utilizes both pulsed and CW lasers, and laser deposition of selected metals.
+ Support Custom Part Processing with Laser Irradiation which includes (1) laser machining using CAD files to directly machine parts through ultrafast laser irradiation,(2) laser ablation and laser annealing to affect surface properties, (3) nanosecond laser machining of thicker parts using a variety of wavelengths, (4) impact studies through laser flyer plate launch, and more.
+ Support development of new capabilities, trouble shoot, repair, operate, and maintain a variety of pulsed laser systems.
+ Develop ES&H documentation such as operating procedures, pressure safety data packages, laser safety, electrical safety, etc.
+ Work safely in a team environment and maintain security.


+ High school diploma plus three years' experience in Laser or Optical Technology
+ Experience working with open beam CW or pulsed lasers in a research & development or laboratory setting
+ Experience operating, aligning, trouble shooting, repairing, and maintaining lasers
+ Experience in Computer Aided Drafting
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance


+ Experience with the laser assisted chemical etching
+ Proven oral and written communication skills
+ Knowledge of MSOffice: Outlook, Excel, Power Point, Word
+ Ability to work independently and in a team environment
+ Knowledge of electronics
+ Experience with pressure systems
+ Active DOE Q-level security clearance

Department Description:

The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films and their characterization, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and metal additive manufacturing for the Laboratories. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation. Thin film properties can also be characterized. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso-scale devices, electrical discharge machining (EDM), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro-metrology, as well as technical consulting. Metal additive manufacturing includes powder bed, wire, and LENS technologies. Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.
