Department Description:

Analytical and Materials Sciences (AMS), Department 02576 is a part of Component Science, Engineering and Production Center, Organization 2500. TheCenteris responsible for the research, design, qualification, production, and surveillance of over one hundred products across three product lines: power sources, explosives, and neutron generators. The products support both Nuclear Deterrence and Strategic Partnership Program customers. Our products utilize ceramics, metals, polymers and thin films with gas loading to make devices that operate at the limits of materials performance. Materials related issues can limit the performance of existing devices and must be fully understood before implementing new designs. AMS laboratories and staff employ a suite of materials, chemistry and surface characterization tools (optical, SEM, XRD, Auger, XPS, FIB, FTIR, Raman, DMA, DTA, ICP-OES/MS, XRF, Impedance Spectroscopy, and several high resolution mass specs) for providing critical data to our customers, solving problems and creating fundamental understanding of materials effects relevant to the mission with a focus on neutron generator related issues. The research environment is dynamic with projects spanning processing, joining, mechanical, chemical and electrical testing of materials, and multi-material systems. The high-impact team of talented staff and technologists have advanced degrees in Materials, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The work of the department is mix of problem-solving activities, advanced characterization of new and legacy materials, and forward-looking research. The department participates, manages and leads several collaborative projects with staff within Sandia (with organizations in 1000 and 8000), other national labs and universities. Our current outside collaborators include PennState, Harvard, USU, PNNL, SRNL, LANL, LLNL, Omega-LLE, AFRL and industry partners.
