Intern - Weapon Surety Engineering R&D Undergrad Co-op

An undergraduate co\-op position exists within the Weapon Surety Engineering II Department to support weapon surety activities\. The co\-op will run from approximately June 2019 to December 2019\. Candidates must have the ability to learn quickly and handle multiple work assignments\. Demonstrated organizational and communications skills are important for success in this position\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Complete a project supporting component development, design and production, based on interest and available projects
+ Learn fundamentals in nuclear safety
+ Learn fundamentals in failure evaluation and mitigation
+ Learn fundamentals in component function and system integration


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Undergraduate student at an accredited university
+ Enrolled full time in the term immediately preceding the internship
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Registration with the university's co\-op office
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Enrollment in a university and working towards an Engineering or Science degree \(e\.g\. Mechanical, Electrical, Materials, Systems\) with demonstrated high academic achievement
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy \(DOE\) L or Q\-Level security clearance


+ Excellent organizational and communication skills
+ Strong desire to contribute to national security
+ Experience with failure analysis and mitigation
+ Experience evaluating experimental data and model output
+ Motivated to learn new processes and technologies
+ Ability to learn quickly and handle multiple work assignments

Department Description:

The Weapon Surety Engineering II Department is a customer\-focused organization that provides safety expertise during the weapon system lifecycle\. Engineers develop a deep expertise in both component and system function to support rigorous evaluation and mitigation of potential failure modes\. We operate across multiple engineering disciplines \(mechanical, electrical, computer, materials and systems engineering\) with opportunities to develop cross\-disciplinary expertise\. The team supports a variety of stockpile systems and is part of the product teams during development, design and production, as well as advanced concept and exploratory efforts\. Our engineers use their extensive component and system knowledge, as well as experimental data and modeling, to ensure products function as intended with assured safety\. Members of our department learn the function of multiple components, how those components integrate within the system and apply surety principles and processes to ensure safe and reliable nuclear deterrent\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted L\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship\.
