The RAMS institute is seeking highly qualified graduate students pursuing relevant degrees in mechanical, civil, or aerospace engineering and research interests in Solid Mechanics, Shock Physics, Material Mechanics, Structural Dynamics or similar disciplines to support on-going programs during the summer of 2021. Students having completed at least one year of study in pursuit of a Masters or Ph.D. degrees are preferred, however, students in transition from undergraduate to graduate programs may also be considered, space permitting. Successful candidates will be assigned a staff mentor and work as part of a team of undergraduate and graduate interns from across the United States. Students will be challenged to conduct both independent and group work, to mentor undergraduate interns, and to periodically present their work to staff and management.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Perform entry to mid-level work within a research and development, science and engineering environment working in conjunction with Sandia staff on projects that involve applying integrated technical judgment-which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses-to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to Sandia National Laboratories missions. Support work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying an understanding of engineering and scientific principles. Assist in the creation and application of scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems.
+ Job assignments are focused in the area of Research and Development (R&D), and will vary based upon organization, discipline preference, and specific job requirements as defined in the job specification. Duties may include working collaboratively with R&D staff with developmental research, analysis of technology and engineering options, project design, testing, formulating conclusions, data collection, and analyzing experimental data.

Department Description:

Sponsored by Sandias Engineering Sciences Center, the Research and Applications of Mechanics of Structures (RAMS) Institute provides students an opportunity to work with outstanding technical staff in providing engineering solutions to national security mission deliverables. Institute participants will research, develop, and apply computational capabilities to define mechanical environments, and simulate response of complex structural systems subjected to extreme loading conditions. Students work in a collaborative environment and participate in frequent technical and team building activities throughout their internship, including career discussions, tours, and presentations by invited speakers. Students are assigned to projects and mentors through a process that matches their interests to on-going projects. In addition to their main project work, and depending on interests, some students may also participate in other supporting program or project opportunities.
