The Primary Standards Lab at Sandia/NM seeks to hire an undergraduate intern that has a passion for dimensional and force metrology\. In this internship, the student will learn good laboratory and measurement practices, traceable calibration of force transducers and dimensional artifacts, and quantitative methods to calculate measurement uncertainty\. This internship will provide the student with a strong foundation on research and measurement assurance\. As workload permits, the intern will have the opportunity to engage and actively participate in R&D projects pursued in the Length, Mass, and Force Laboratory \(LMF\)\. Research topics include novel methods for nanoscale to macroscale dimensional metrology as well as measurement automation with robotics\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Perform calibrations of dimensional artifacts with an automated imaging system
+ Perform calibrations of force transducers through comparison to primary force transducers
+ Perform measurements with traceability to base units of the International System of Units \(SI\)
+ Perform quantitative analysis of measurement uncertainty

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0
+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Familiarity and experience with basic lab operations
+ Ability to work within all Environmental, Health and Safety requirements and procedures
+ Currently an undergraduate sophomore, junior, or senior
+ Currently majoring in Engineering, Physical Science or related field

Desired:

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.2/4\.0
+ Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Word
+ Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical and electronic skills
+ Department of Energy \(DOE\) L\-level or higher security clearance

Department Description:

Department 9144, Primary Physical Standards, provides calibration support to the Nuclear Security Enterprise, including support for SNL research and production organizations\. Department 9144 includes multiple projects and consists of parameters such as flow, humidity, leaks, vacuum, radiation, optics, temperature and dimensional measurement\. Primary Physical Standards, maintains a wide variety of measurement expertise and consults on technical problems, calibrates reference standards, and assists in technical oversight of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Weapons Complex contractor standards laboratories\. The overall calibration program is accredited by the NIST National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) L\-level security clearance\.
