We are seeking year-round undergraduate engineering students in the Concentrating Solar Technologies Department to assist our R&D staff with concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies for the generation of electricity and fuels at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF). The NSTTF is the only large-scale research and testing facility in the United States for CSP technologies. Work is focused on enabling todays CSP industry and performing R&D that will change the nations energy future. The department conducts its research and testing in partnership with the US Department of Energy, other national laboratories, industry, and academia. The department has access to Sandias broader R&D capabilities and expertise, while simultaneously offering testing capabilities and services to other laboratory missions.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Assist with FEA/CFD modeling, testing and analysis of concentrating solar power technologies (CSP). Testing may include the evaluation of CSP technologies such as high-temperature receivers, collectors, and thermal storage systems. Analyses of relevant processes (heat and mass transfer) for these tests will be performed using 3D computational models (e.g. SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS FLUENT), Engineering Equation Solver (EES) thermodynamic systems software, analytical models (e.g., MATLAB) and Data Acquisition Software (e.g. LabVIEW)
+ Assist with documentation, administrative tasks and archiving activities relating to new or existing publications generated by the team or in the program library
+ Assist with the general operations and administrative duties of the department when called upon


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U.S. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Academic knowledge pertaining to heat transfer, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics
+ Registered as an undergraduate engineering student in an accredited engineering program at a university
+ Ability to be present at the NSTTF for 8 or more hours per week during semester


+ Some familiarity with Concentrating Solar Power (CSP)
+ Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office products
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills
+ Experience using MATLAB and other programming languages
+ Experimental, data acquisition and data processing experience
+ Experience in computational modeling, particularly CFD and FEA
+ Familiarity with Drones and associated controls
+ Familiarity with data acquisition systems
+ Previous experience (through academic study or through work-related experience/internships) with thermal-fluids research

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
