The Applied Systems Analysis and Research Department is seeking a dedicated Geosciences Engineering graduate student to join our multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers who are passionate about their work. You will be conducting innovative research todevelop advanced numerical simulation capabilities describing the multi-scale, multi-physics subsurface processes related to deep geologic disposal of nuclear waste. You will use state-of-the-arttools and high-performance computingto develop simulation software and visualize results.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop conceptual and numerical models of the complex, coupled thermal and hydrological processes affecting fluid flow and transport in the subsurface
+ Utilize knowledge of object-oriented programming and scripting to develop new software functionality in PFLOTRAN and post-process simulation results with Python scripts
+ Demonstrate working knowledge or willingness to learn new concepts relating to:

- Parallel computing
- Numerical methods for solving nonlinear, coupled systems of PDEs
- Agile software development and version control
- Multiphase, multicomponent flow in porous media
+ Collect, analyze, and present data
+ Improve methods, protocols, and results through self-evaluation and troubleshooting

Required:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U.S. citizenship

Desired:

+ Currently pursuing a graduate degree in Earth Science, Geoscience Engineering, or related field
+ Classwork or research experience related to numerical simulation of subsurface fluid flow in porous media
+ Experience developing scientific object-oriented code in a Linux environment (e.g. C, C++, Fortran 2003, Python)
+ Familiarity with version control and/or Agile code development practices
+ Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to develop technical ideas and results and present them in oral and written form
+ Demonstrated abilities to work independently and to succeed as a member of a team

Department Description:

The Applied Systems Analysis and Research Department develops a wide range of software and engineering solutions to ensure the safe deep geologic disposal of commercial spent nuclear fuel and US DOE legacy nuclear wastes. We develop high performance computing, quality-assured software for probabilistic performance assessment of deep geologic disposal systems, including tools for simulation of the coupled processes affecting radionuclide release and transport in the subsurface, sampling-based uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, and automated run-control. We conduct experiments at an underground research laboratory in bedded salt to characterize features and investigate processes affecting repository performance; and partner with adjacent departments and colleagues throughout the national lab complex to integrate mechanistic models of the physical and chemical processes affecting engineered and natural barrier systems into total system performance assessments of generic repositories in a variety of host rock environments.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
