The Pipeline Integrity Team Lead for the High Pressure Integrity and Analysis (HPIA) group is accountable for developing and implementing integrity related assessment and remediation programs of high pressure distribution, transmission and storage pipelines within the SoCalGas and SDG&E service territory. This individual manages the technologies, systems, processes, and policies impacting integrity management at both SoCalGas and SDG&E.

  • Manages staff of engineers tasked with the assessment of high pressure pipelines using approved methods in accordance with 49 CFR 192.921 and 192.937 and provides engineering support to the Pipeline Integrity Department. Must review and approve assessment-related documentation, engineering calculations, engineering recommendations, external communications to regulatory agencies (e.g. CPUC and PHMSA), and employee expenditures. Must also perform regular performance reviews and manage employee training and development.
  • Develop and manage Company procedures and standards related to the remediation and assessment of high pressure pipelines which must comply with federal and state regulatory requirements and industry best practices/processes. In some cases, development of training programs to support implementation may be required.
  • Assemble and provide assessment and performance metrics data in response to regulatory requests and inquiries. May develop and document Company positions and interpretations of rules and regulations.
  • Coordinate resources and provide engineering support to other departments within the Engineering and Operations Staff organization related to the examination and defect analysis of exposed pipe segments.
  • Procurement of third-party vendors for engineering analysis related to the integrity of high pressure pipelines and management of third-party expenditures. May represent Company on technical committees such as ASME, NACE, AGA and PRCI.



  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in pipeline integrity, defect assessment, failure analysis, engineering critical assessment, fitness-for-service evaluations, pipeline inspection and non-destructive evaluation, or related disciplines such as welding and defect repair; or 7+ years of engineering experience. Must demonstrate knowledge of integrity assessment methods and industry practices.
  • Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering or technical science (chemistry, materials, environmental, etc.) required.
  • Registered professional engineer, and/or graduate degree such as MBA or Master’s in Materials Engineering or Engineering Management preferred.
  • Training and certifications such as National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) certification or American Petroleum Institute (API) training strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with the implementation and execution of requirements listed in 49 CFR Subparts O and P is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in both the spoken and written word (written sample of technical report with non-confidential information is requested prior to interview).
  • Highly developed skills in strategy development, planning and project management.
  • Previous supervisory experience desired.

The HPIA Team Lead may need to participate in field visits to locations where inspections or direct examinations are being performed throughout the SoCalGas and SDG&E service territories. Generally, field visits require standing and/or walking for extended periods of time.

The HPIA Team Lead approves contracts worth up to $100,000 for third-party engineering evaluations related to metallurgical analysis, fitness-for-service (FFS) analysis or pipeline failure analysis. In addition, the team lead makes decisions that directly impact an average annual budget of approximately $90 million USD (capital and O&M combined) for integrity assessments performed in accordance with the Transmission Integrity Management Plan (TIMP) through the selection of threat specific inspection technologies, Nondestructive Examination (NDE) direct examination, flaw/defect evaluation and creation of remediation plans in response to ILI results.
