The Sandia National Laboratories \(SNL\) Radiation Protection Department is seeking a Health Physicist/Radiological Engineer to provide technical support and leadership for SNL's diverse radiological operations and the corporate radiation protection program\. Health Physicists/Radiological Engineers perform radiological hazard evaluations, design and implement radiological protection safety programs, assist line organizations to implement operational aspects of the SNL Radiation Protection Program, recommend appropriate controls, develop radiological monitoring protocols, assess program effectiveness and line implementation, assist with incident review and analysis, develop corrective action plans and lessons learned, and provide oversight of radiological control technicians \(RCTs\)\. Health Physicists/Radiological Engineers respond to and direct others in incident and emergency response situations\. Work assignments may change frequently\. Some travel may be required\. Activities include working with or in the presence of hazardous materials\. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to, ionizing and non\-ionizing radiation, chemicals, safety hazards, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards\.

Required:

+ Bachelors or Master's degree in health physics, nuclear engineering or related discipline\.
+ Minimum of five years \(staff level\) diverse professional experience in health physics for Bachelors or non\-Health Physics/Nuclear Engineering Masters, or 1 year for Masters degree in Health Physics/Nuclear Engineering\.
+ Experience continuously improving a radiological protection program, including implementation of new radiological controls best practices\.
+ Ability to handle multiple projects and move from program to operational support work and back, and between varying types of radiological operations \(e\.g\., nuclear facility, waste management, accelerators, bench\-scale R&D, etc\.\) quickly and effectively\.
+ Working knowledge of 10CFR835, 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20\.
+ Ability to effectively direct and mentor RCTs\.
+ Current computer skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications\.
+ Ability to occasionally work a modified schedule to meet customer needs and travel\.
+ Possess a valid drivers license and access to a private vehicle for travel to and from work locations\.
+ Able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" or "Q" security clearance\.

Desired:

+ Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or in the process of obtaining certification\.
+ Experience working in an R&D environment\.
+ Experience working in an operational environment such as DOE or NRC facilities or Naval Reactors\.
+ Excellent organizational and individual leadership skills\.
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail\.
+ Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills and flexibility\.
+ Ability to effectively work independently and in teamed/matrixed situations in a fast\-paced, deadline\-driven environment\.
+ Active DOE L or Q clearance\.

Department Description:

The Radiation Protection Department provides radiation protection support services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the Corporate Radiation Protection Program\. Services provided include: translation of DOE directives and Federal rules into Sandia specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation\-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls\. The Department works with the Corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
