If so, we have multiple openings for highly motivated hardware/embedded systems security engineers (R&D S&E, Cybersecurity) to join our Digital Systems Security team!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work closely with systems engineers, design engineers, digital assurance specialist to design cyber secure products
+ Support technical design reviews, and validate hardware security implementations of digital systems, and provide clear feedback and actionable solutions
+ Support the development of security policies and requirements, and provide design solutions that ensure requirements are met
+ Identify and present innovative security solutions for the systems, design, and engineering teams
+ Support security risk and threat assessments and provide vulnerability remediation guidance and recommendations at the systems and components level
+ Champion security best practices and serve as a security subject matter expert for the design and engineering teams
+ Gather, organize and present information requested for internal and external security data calls


+ Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Cyber Security, Systems Engineering, or related subject plus two or more years of experience; or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Cyber Security, Systems Engineering or related subject; or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
+ Previous experience in systems engineering or digital system design, preferably in hardware and embedded systems security
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance


+ Hardware design experience welcome, but more importantly is the ability and interest to bring a security-first mindset to digital systems design.
+ Experience in hardware and embedded systems security
+ Experience in digital design and systems engineering, preferably with interest in security topics such as applied cryptography, vulnerability assessment, threat modeling, and risk assessment.
+ The ability to approach and create cyber-secured design from a holistic systems perspective, but still sweat the details of individual components
+ Experience with secure-system design principles and digital assurance principles
+ Have offensive security mindset
+ Familiarity with of DOE/NNSA cyber security orders and policies; relevant federal and private standards and requirements (e.g., NIST, ISO, CNSS, STIGS), and knowledge of risk management frameworks
+ Active DOE Q security clearance

Department Description:

The Cyber Risk & Enterprise Security department focuses on two primary functions for the laboratories. The department is the home of the Nuclear Deterrent Digital Systems Security team and Sandia National Laboratories California Enterprise Cyber Security team.

The Nuclear Deterrent Digital Systems Security team provides digital-system security expertise and analysis for Nuclear Deterrent (ND) system and component design, verification, and assessment. We partner with ND programs to assure digital specification, verification, and reliability considerations are well informed regarding cyber security issues and risks. Staff serve as local domain experts for SNL/CA ND systems and components organizations. We conduct research and develop digital-security methods and tools for ND applications, with an emphasis on embedded systems. We partner with external cybersecurity experts and internal cyber organizations across the laboratory to remain cognizant of and contribute to cutting edge digital security research.

The Sandia California Enterprise Cyber Security team is responsible for Sandia California's network security operations, the network security architecture, and information & cyber security research. The department performs research in all areas of cyber defense, vulnerability analyses of networks and networked systems, vulnerability scanning, intrusion detection, incident response, computer and network forensics, counterintelligence technical support, and consulting services to other organizations with information security concerns. The team partners with various organizations across the laboratories and external stakeholders to ensure the protection of Sandias information and assets.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
