We are seeking a Postdoc to work with a multi-disciplinary team aimed at improving this nations capabilities for monitoring underground nuclear explosions anywhere in the world. Your work will focus on data analysis and computational geophysics. You will initially support existing department R&D efforts, but, over time, you may have opportunities to apply your expertise to development of new R&D efforts within Sandia mission areas.

Our expectations of you will be to increase both Sandias and your own impact and standing in these programs by producing high-quality results, including publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations. You will be expected to perform work according to Sandia values, which include serving national needs, delivering with excellence, respect for others, teaming, and scientific integrity.


+ PhD in Geophysics, or closely related discipline


+ Publications in scientific peer-reviewed journals
+ Research experience in the one or more of the following technical fields: computational geophysics; seismology; infrasound; inverse theory, modeling and optimization, including full waveform inversion; uncertainty quantification, mathematical geophysical analysis; continuum mechanics; geophysical signal processing; compressive sensing; processing and analysis of field-collected data sets; computational physics; machine learning
+ Experience in computer programming related to waveform processing and numerical computation for research applications
+ Strong organizational, written, oral, and presentation skills, including the ability effectively communicate scientific/engineering concepts and results at multiple levels (highly technical to general audience)
+ Ability to work effectively both individually and on teams
+ Proficiency with at least one computer programming language (FORTRAN, Java, C, C++, Python, MATLAB)

Department Description:

The Geophysical Detection Technology R&D department performs geophysical monitoring research and development in support of Sandias mission as a national security laboratory. The teams geophysics expertise addresses challenges surrounding ground-based nuclear detonation detection through next-generation algorithms exploiting multi-phenomenological data, advanced sensor technologies, and demonstration experiments.

The team has a broad range of expertise in field seismology, subsurface characterization, seismo-acoustic and infrasound modeling; evaluation of seismic and infrasound sensors and systems; and the processing, analysis, and interpretation of all types of geophysical data. Technical work spans the spectrum from theoretical to applied and includes strong modeling, lab and field data collection, and analysis capabilities. The department serves as Sandias resource for ground-based monitoring expertise, partnering with departments across the labs to integrate multiple types of dataincluding optical, seismic, electromagnetic, infrasound, atmospheric, radionuclideto address broad national security needs.
