The Batten College of Engineering and Technology at Old Dominion University (ODU) invites applications from accomplished individuals with an earned PhD or equivalent degree in engineering to serve as the Inaugural Director of our First Year Engineering Program starting Fall 2019. The successful candidate is expected to provide leadership in shaping and coordinating our program and courses (structure, curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment); promoting consistency in course contents, standards and instructional modes across different classes; supervising all first-year faculty; coordinating with faculty teaching in the program and related departments (e.g., Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry); and teaching sections of the relevant classes as appropriate. Salary and rank will be based on experience and qualifications.


Old Dominion University is a research extensive public institution with a total student enrollment of 24,000. The University is located in Norfolk, Virginia, one of the seven cities that make up the Hampton Roads region. The Batten College of Engineering and Technology has eight undergraduate engineering programs housed in six department with approximately 450 incoming first year students. Close connections exist between all of these departments and local industry giving our students internship and employment opportunities, as well as options for interaction in the first-year program and beyond. We seek an individual with strong accomplishments in disciplinary and/or engineering education research, who has an established pedagogical track record in working with undergraduate engineering students. Also of interest is a person who can work effectively with local and regional companies in providing solutions to Engineering problems. An interest in engineering education best practices, research, and assessment are desirable attributes. Candidates must be committed to contributing to high-quality education of a diverse student body at the undergraduate level. 


Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree, in engineering or related field.
  • Substantial record of productive involvement in curricular and pedagogical developments in the teaching of engineering.
  • Evidence of active scholarship related to curricular or pedagogical issues in engineering.
  • Successful experience in supporting the academic success of diverse, underrepresented or underserved student populations.
  • Strong commitment to teaching excellence.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in first year engineering programs and initiatives.

  • Experience with data collection and analysis: ability to collect, analyze, and assess data related to student success, student learning outcomes, and program success.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience with first year engineeringstudents; be committed to project based learning; demonstrated student andprogram assessment skills;
  • Thorough understanding of principles, practices and procedures involved in FYE program development, theoretical models, best practices and current issues supporting in first-year student transition, development, and retention.

  • Significant and increasingly responsible supervisory experience.
