This position is focused on high/medium voltage power distribution systems, standby power, and exterior lighting systems. You will work within a multi-disciplined engineering department that supports the daily operations of utility infrastructure systems. The role also supports power distribution system operations and coordinates activities with other engineers, maintenance teams, and facilities operations teams.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Lead the development of outage procedures and provide operations and maintenance support for the power distribution system.
+ Develop asset management plans, maintenance plans, and system sustainment plans and projects.
+ Provide engineering support to projects and review designs for conformance to engineering standards and codes.
+ Coordinate with maintenance team leaders to develop a maintenance program for the system to include, where necessary, training for maintenance personnel.
+ Identify and resolve preventative and corrective maintenance issues.
+ Identify long-term power distribution system needs using asset management principles.
+ Support energy management and resource conservation efforts and assist in integrating efforts across the site.
+ Conduct condition assessments and develop methods to understand and predict condition of system out to 10 years and capture the results of those assessments in reports and GIS. Present system needs and risks in an asset management plan and partner with Strategic Planning to develop sustainment strategies. Deliver project proposals that support funding requests for system sustainment.
+ Review and update the replacement plant value on an annual basis and understand the quantities of the system.
+ Verify the accuracy of GIS information and implement strategies to improve the GIS system information in support of system operations, and sustainment activities.
+ Manage system design standards and specifications through partnership with stakeholders to drive efficiencies and improve life cycle costs.
+ Participate in developing and updating procedures and processes with a focus on improving operations collaborating with the process coordinators.
+ Provide input on Site Modification Requests and follow through on recommendations.
+ Support the Planning Department in locating future building sites and understand and support the direction of the Long-Range Development Plan (LRDP)
+ Provide input and support as needed to ensure that safety and environmental compliance issues are being addressed and followed for the system.
+ Provide input into the project execution process to include:

- Review of project charters
- Development of project requirements
- Participation in project designs, and reviews of A/E designs as requested
+ Communicate and work with the project stakeholders to provide solutions to issues in a timely and comprehensive manner.
+ Oversee NERC and WECC compliance reporting requirements; review and validate monthly electrical metering data to then provide metering reports and site wide renewable production data.
+ Maintain site wide computer model(s) for each utility system then consult with SNL management on electrical use, contracts and issues.


+ Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on power system engineering or Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering with five (5) or more years of experience related to power distribution systems or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level clearance.


+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be a motivated self-starter, capable of working both independently and in a team environment to enable a safe and productive work environment.
+ Computer experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and the desire to learn our Enterprise Asset Management and Maintenance Software System, IBM Maximo, powerflow and short circuit modeling software, and utilize GIS based mapping systems.
+ Demonstrated knowledge of NFPA 70E, certified completion of training course is preferred.
+ Demonstrated knowledge of maintenance requirements for high voltage system components not limited to; substation equipment, transformers, relays, switches, overhead distribution feeders, underground duct banks and distribution feeders.
+ Demonstrated ability to analyze system drawings, construction plans, and system one-line schematics.
+ Ability to follow process and desire to ensure that processes deliver the results in a safe and secure manner.

Department Description:

The Infrastructure Engineering Department (4852) provides a comprehensive perspective of Operations and Engineering support for Sandia/NM site infrastructure systems and primary utility systems. We provide support to our mission partners related to site activities, determination of new project needs, and engineering solutions. Our department supports excavation and penetration activities as well as Facilities Graphic Information System (FGIS) support for Sandia/NM Facilities and Infrastructure systems.

Security Clearance:
