The Integrated Technical Systems Team, 5403, has an opening for an Engineering Systems Integration/Implementation Professional to become a member of the Center 5400 ES&H team. The successful candidate will be an integral member of a diverse team of explosive and ES&H workers within the Center, performing a broad spectrum of tasks to enable the day-to-day explosives operations both in Albuquerque, NM, and at remote locations. The Integrated Technical Systems Department strives for continuous improvement through training and mentoring, while developing the department into a model of excellence. The successful candidate will be required to continually improve and maintain the Center's Explosives Safety Program, integrate safety into explosives design and operations, and will serve as the Center's representative in a number of Corporate explosives initiatives.

On any given day, you may be called onto:

+ Act as the co-representative on the Sandia Explosives Safety Committee, liaison to other Explosives Centers, and center explosives training coordinator.
+ Direct 5400 Explosives Safety Committee activities.
+ Provide Site Safety Officer support to Kauai Test Facility operations.
+ Provide non-explosives related support to the ES&H team as needed.
+ Assist in WP&C/ES&H Documentation; PHS/HA/NEPA for Explosives sites; Hazard Analyses for Explosives Activities; Managing Center Explosives Documentation; Explosives OP development and review; and review and update site Plans/Building Licenses.
+ Lead explosives related course development and training.
+ Develop and maintain qualification Cards (Qual Cards).
+ Develop and maintain Job Certification and Training Records (JCTRs).
+ Facility Management: Coordinate annual safety inspection for all explosives sites; Conduct general walk-throughs of labs and sites with explosives operations; assist with explosives audits and assessments; Coordinate grounding systems maintenance; and Coordinate lightning protection systems maintenance.
+ Provide content for the Center Explosives Web Site.
+ Lead Explosive Storage review and reduction for the Center.
+ Assist with Center activities related to deduction and maintenance of Rocket Motor Inventory.
+ Provide Explosives Safety expertise throughout the Center, including work in the Centers Conduct of Operations capacity.
+ Team with the Project Safety Leads to identify and analyze explosives hazards and determine necessary controls.
+ Define requirements for the development, fielding and test of Center explosives programs.
+ Provide technical guidance to specific projects regarding safe and effective design and operation of systems containing explosives.

In addition to the listed tasks, the employee may be requested to perform other tasks as needed but they would be within the scope of the listed tasks. The candidate selected will be expected to value the members of the team and effectively assist them by developing and implementing the vision and goals of the team, setting high expectations, and partnering across agencies to ensure success while maintaining a consistent, secure, and productive work environment. The employee must be able to successfully work with diverse and complex systems to address challenging problems while working in sometimes fast paced, high visibility and high stress environments.


+ Bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM field plus 5 years of relevant experience.
+ Experience with DOE/Sandia explosives safety requirements.
+ Experience as an explosives worker at a DOE/Sandia facility or similar government facility.
+ Experience in providing classroom or on-the-job training courses.
+ Travel is required, possibly for extended periods for project support.
+ Active and ability to maintain a required US DOE Q security clearance.


+ Specific training in explosives operations, including arming and firing operations.
+ Naval School Explosives Ordnance Disposal Graduate.
+ Experience working with Center, Division and Corporate safety personnel.
+ Knowledge of Sandias Work Planning & Controls philosophy.
+ Experience identifying and implementing engineered and administrative controls for explosive operations.
+ Knowledge of past explosives incidents and applied lessons learned.
+ Experience with planning and/or conducting explosives testing in support of research & development activities.

Department Description:

The Center 5400 Integrated Technical Systems Department, 5403, is divided into two components. Org. 5403, employs a wide variety of technical staff and technologists that provide technical support in the areas of Mission Assurance; Security; and ES&H, including Work Planning and Control; corporate compliance; and laboratory integration. Org, 5403-2, Technical Program Support Team, operates a laboratory complex that provides hardware definition, assembly, ground test, instrumentation, and characterization. Department 5403 supports programs in the Integrated Military Systems Center.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
