We are seeking a highly-motivated person who is passionate about building a safe and healthy work culture to join our Safety and Health Engineering team as Sandias Lead for Electrical Safety. The position requires the maintenance and continued growth of a high-quality electrical safety program and provides the opportunity to contribute to a wide variety of Sandia projects and to become knowledgeable of technologies from robotics to environmental testing of weapons and components as well as practice the precepts of industrial safety.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work with team members in the safety and health engineering department to develop, implement, maintain, and manage Sandia's electrical safety program.
+ Consult with line organizations, safety engineers and other electrical safety subject matter experts regarding analysis and mitigation of electrical hazards.
+ Assist line organizations in implementing NFPA70E requirements including performance of shock and arc flash risk assessments.
+ Be involved with trend analysis, issue resolution as well as addressing periodic DOE/NNSA concerns.
+ Facilitate the SNL committee on Electrical Safety meetings.
+ Participate with the DOE Electrical Safety community.
+ Be directly involved in all aspects of Sandias electrical safety training requirements.
+ Be responsible for the daily oversight of the electrical safety subject matter expert team activities including mentorship of junior staff members.

In this role the person will have support responsibility for all Sandia sites including but not limited to Sandia NM, Sandia CA, Tonopah Test Range, Kauai Launch Complex, and other remote locations.


+ Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or a closely related field) plus 10 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level Security clearance.


+ Certified Safety Professional.
+ Experience interpreting and applying electrical safety standards and electrical codes (OSHA 29 CFR 1910, NFPA 70E, NEC, etc.).
+ Knowledge of regulations and code pertaining to electrical safety and procedures to qualify equipment that has not been tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
+ Ability to support research and development activities such as: pulsed power, instrumentation/calibration, high voltage - low current and manufacturing activities.
+ NFPA/International Association of Electrical Inspectors Electrical Code Inspector's Certification.
+ NFPA Certified Electrical Safety Professional certification.
+ Ability to work effectively with others in a teaming environment under minimal supervision.
+ Excellent customer relationship focus and workplace interpersonal skills.
+ Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
+ Self-starter who can work with line customers and other Safety and Health professionals in a fast-paced, critical deadline, teaming atmosphere.
+ Interest in improving the electrical safety program, writing safety program documents, and developing training and tools to enhance hazard analysis and electrical safety.
+ Broad understanding of the DOE's Integrated Safety Management principles and how ISM is applied towards electrical hazards.
+ Active DOE/DOD security clearance.

Safety and Health Engineering provides the tools and expertise to evaluate and control occupational hazards that may occur during work, while also ensuring SNL meets contractual and promulgated worker safety and health requirements. Safety and Health Engineering is responsible for a diverse set of occupational safety and health programs that includes Ergonomics, Electrical Safety, Confined Space, Laser Safety, Respiratory Protection, Chemical Safety and Hearing Conservation along with many others.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
