Job Summary:

This position is for an engineer to help advance development, testing, and pilot demonstration of smart energy technologies applied to support utility and electricity market needs. Considering the growing need for smart end-use energy applications to support renewable integration, the candidate filling the position will be responsible for performing research with the aim of understanding electricity market opportunities, identifying strategies and demonstrating value through smart energy applications. The candidate will work both independently and as part of larger project teams, led by experienced researchers in collaborative engagements with technologist, businesses that are large energy end-users, and the utility industry.

 Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Identify and specify new requirements for smart energy applications to support utility programs through software automation
  • Collect and analyze data to inform strategies for energy and power demand savings
  • Advance understanding of electricity markets and compile answers to key questions posed, through data analyses, literature search and documentation review
  • Aid in functional requirements and use case definition, system architecture design, and software development and testing
  • Execute pilot testing of smart energy applications, analyze data collected, and formulate insights on viability and value of smart energy strategies applied under different contexts
  • Prepare reports and presentations that clearly communicate project findings
  • Support assembling research proposals

 Education & Years of Experience:

  • BS in electrical engineering and computer science OR B.S. in engineering with work experience in software development required
  • MS in electricity engineering, computer science, or related field preferred
  • Minimum 2+ years working experience preferred

Additional Job Information:

Ideal Candidate:

  • Masters degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field
  • 2+ years of experience after graduation
  • A burgeoning specialty or interest in areas of smart end-use technologies (e.g. plug loads in commercial buildings, smart home appliances, demand response automation in water or wastewater industries, etc.)
  • Background in smart energy or demand response automation technologies, and energy or engineering economics
  • Understanding of electricity markets
  • Experience in data analysis, with Python/R and ability to extract, summarize, and clearly document key results
  • Exposure to real-time monitoring, controls, and data collection methods
  • Experienced in working with different personality types and productively interfacing with clients and third parties to execute projects
  • An understanding of:
    • The big picture—the role of smart energy applications in the electricity industry
    • Software requirements specification, implementation, and testing; or executing projects to demonstrate new capabilities enabled through software automation
  • Self-starter with passion to make a difference through supervised research in support of the electric power industry and renewable integration
