Job Summary and Description:

Performs advanced engineering/scientific analysis with minimal direction and supervision. Beginning to demonstrate creativity and ingenuity in providing technical solutions. Works directly with EPRI staff and high interaction with members and industry.

• Conducts technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project team.

• Conducts independent research and begins to manage small, less complex projects

• Provides technical advice and counsel to other professionals within EPRI.

• Assists Project/Program managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations.

• Reviews progress and evaluates results. Makes changes in methods, design or equipment where necessary.

• Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• 4-5 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required.

• Good verbal and written communication skills

• Required some supervision and guidance to recognize strategic issues and build collaborative projects

• Responsible for the success of individual projects

• Works closely with contractors or staff to complete project research

• May participate in multiple projects

• Individual contributor

• May present research results to advisors or technical staff/members

• Starting to develop technical depth in 1-2 areas

• Focus on projects within a program

Additional Job Information:

Research the current state of technologies and communication networks used in the electric power sector to manage energy usage of customer loads and identify opportunities to advance the proliferation of load management technologies.

  • Manage the design, development and testing of new software applications from embedded firmware to cloud-based applications.

  • Develop and execute test procedures, analyze, document and report results.

  • Plan and carry out assigned tasks required to meet project objectives, such as; selecting subcontractors; develop statements of work, obtain bids, support established processes to execute subcontracts, oversee and support subcontractors as they carry out the work and approve milestone payments.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Knowledge of the following is a plus; communication network protocols (Cellular, IEEE 802.1, 802.11, 802.15.4), machine-to-machine (serial and serial peripheral interface SPI), transport protocols such as Modbus, TCP/IP, HTTP, MQTT)

  • Knowledge of C/C++, LabView, C#, Visual Basic, Java or Python is a plus.

  • Must be familiar with networking, peripheral interfaces, signal processing and debugging tools such as bus analyzers and oscilloscopes

  • B.S in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering

  • 4-5 years of experience as an electric controls/automation engineer

  • 1-2 years of experience in the electric power industry and/or demand response is a plus, but not mandatory
