Job Title: Engineer and Power System Modeler - Electricity Market Operations and Design Specialization


Location: Palo Alto, CA


Job Summary and Description:

EPRI's grid operations and planning team has a strong track record tackling challenges involved with an evolving power system and integrating emerging technologies onto the power system. The team works with utilities, independent system operators, transmission system operators, and industry groups across the globe to conduct research that improves the affordability and reliability of the grid.


The individual will work with the grid operations and planning team on topics related to electricity market operations, wholesale electricity market designs, and operations and planning of bulk power systems with an evolving power system. The individual will support research projects related to the technical applications and software solutions that operate the electricity markets as well as the engineering and economic design of those markets.


The candidate can expect the following specific tasks and roles:

  • Working closely with the ISOs and RTOs of North America facilitating collaboration and understanding research needs
  • Working closely with the DOE and National Laboratories on electricity market operations research and ability of emerging technologies to provide grid services
  • Support in hosting webcasts, presenting at utility and ISO member meetings
  • Running commercial software applications in unique ways to solve key challenges in innovative ways
  • Evaluating ways in which software and existing practices can be enhanced to improve economic efficiency and reliability through software development and/or analysis
  • Mentoring and day-to-day supervision of student interns may be required


Performs complex engineering/ scientific analysis with moderate direction and supervision. Works directly with EPRI staff and moderate interaction with members and industry.

  • Conducts technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project team.
  • May conduct independent research.
  • Assists Project/Program managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations.



Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have satisfied requirements of entry level engineer/scientist and have 2-3 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required.
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills
  • Present research externally
  • Understand how work fits across technical area
  • Requires supervision and guidance to conduct specific research tasks and complete projects
  • Works closely with contractors or staff to complete project research
  • May participate in multiple projects
  • Individual contributor


Additional Job Information:

The candidate should have some of the following experience:

  • Familiarity with U.S. and/or Canadian wholesale electricity market design including locational marginal pricing, ancillary service markets, unit commitment and economic dispatch.
  • Familiarity with production cost models like PLEXOS, PROMOD, or PSO
  • Familiarity with linear programming and mixed integer programming and with optimization software languages (e.g., GAMS, AMPL, etc.)
  • Familiarity with electricity network models and power flow a plus
  • Unique expertise with distributed energy resources, electric storage resources, hybrid resources, or other key research topics

The position of the candidate will be commensurate with experience of the candidate, and individuals with more or less experience are encouraged to apply.
